Anyone heard any good metal instrumentals lately? I always enjoy the shredder stuff but I was thinking more along the lines of something with great riffs as well as solos, some of my favorites include:

Dokken - Mr. Scary
Iron Maiden - Genghis Khan/Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)
Jason Becker - Temple Of The Absurd
Scorpions - Coast To Coast
Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy Suite Op. 5
Robert Marcello - Old School
Marty Friedman - Dragon Mistress
Pat Travers - Guitars From Hell
Racer X - Scarified/Technical Difficulties
David Valdes - Legend
Vinnie Moore - NNY

Stuff along those lines...

Pagan's Mind's "Coming Home" has always spoken to me. I used to really be into instrumentals and I love the way you could kind of get your own feel and story from the song, but in the last 2 years or so I've found myself becoming very bored with instrumentals. For me, nothing will ever top Surfing With the Alien album wise.

Oh that reminds me. Pagan's Mind-Exploring Life (Back to the Magic of Childhood pt 2). This one is a killer too.

I would also echo Equilibrium's Mana from the Sagas album. I listen to it constantly, and although it isn't a Friedman style shredder instrumental or anything, i consider it one of the most epic songs in my whole collection.

It is flat out magic; the type of song that makes you want to be a better person!

I love good instrumentals, but most of them aren't really songs, per se.

On an average instrumental album, if I hear one solid melodic, uptempo gem, I'm pleasantly surprised. Tony MacAlpine is often an exception to that rule, as is Kiko Loureiro.

Well, for my money, there's no better instrumental than "YYZ".

But beyond that, there's a band that springs to mind that I think has a couple *killer* instrumentals on their albums: Mezarkabul. Both of the instrumental tracks on Unspoken, "Mezarkabul" and "For Those Who Died Alone" are great. I'm pretty sure there was also an instrumental track on Anatolia (which they did under their Turkish name Pentagram) that also very good.

Man, I wish these guys would do something new. The two albums I mentioned are really underrated metal gems.

You got that straight...

I've been on a massive Anatolia kick all weekend. Brilliant stuff. :notworthy
