This is a tournament style competition to proclaim which country is the best at producing metal in the world. The Metal World Cup will be modeled on FIFA style soccer tournaments. There will be two stages: first a group stage, and then a knockout stage.

Group stage: For the group stage, countries are clustered into groups of four. For each group:
  • BOLD your first choice. This is worth five points.
  • Italicize your second choice. This is worth three points.
  • Underline your third choice. This is worth one point. (If you have no third choice, just leave it blank).
The two countries with the most points will automatically advance.

Knock out stage: There will then be a four round knock-out tournament. Teams will be ranked based on points earned. The knockout stage will follow the pattern below:

You have until next Friday at 5 PM Pacific to vote on the group stage. Therefore, you can change your votes between now and Friday without consequence. Feel free to lobby and share music from any countries that have bands you think other people may not be familiar with.

Wtf Phylactery did you edit your list to match the formatting of mine just as I edited my list to match the formatting of yours?

Haha, I love how I've edited my post to look like yours originally did, and you've edited yours to look like mine originally did. I think yours was correct or else we'd just list them in order. Maybe he has some way to collate the results set up.

Then what's the point in doing the bolding, italicising and underlining? We just rank them in order.

That's how I originally did it and now I've changed it to match Pompey's who changed it to match mine at the same time!

I should note that in my ranking I've occasionally ranked a country with a lower quantity of great metal over one with a greater quantity because I think the former has a more interesting musical identity. I'm referring especially to Japan and Mexico who I ranked over Germany and Australia respectively. I haven't heard a ton of material from either of those countries but much of what I've heard just sounds uniquely Japanese/Mexican and I love that.

While looking for material by an obscure, amazing Mexican band called Gehenna I discovered this sampler called "Escuadron Metalico", and it's a good example of what I'm talking about. The audio quality is utter shit but some of the stuff on it is really interesting. I enjoy listening to samplers of obscure heavy metal bands but none of the other ones I've listened to were this off-kilter and fascinating.

Arguments for Japan:

Chile not being included is a glaring omission.

Suprised so many voted Czech Republic over Russia. I don't even think that is a contest tbh, Russia wins with a landslide. Same with Italys group.

Chile was literally my final cut.

Czech Republic has Master's Hammer, Root, Trist, Lykathea Aflame. I'm not sure there's any Russian act I like as much as any of those.

I think I'm more on the same page as you when it comes to Italy, though I think it's closer than you're suggesting.
