Just got a Chandler TG-2 and I'm LOVING it. I would also like to get an API soon. I'm afraid of lunchboxes but I really want a 3124+.

Lunchboxes are scary when they are pretty empty. Mine has 5 empty slots and I can't wait to fill up.

You can a chassis that holds 2 modules.... but for that kind of money, I would go for the API A2D which 2 pres and a very nice DA converter (apparently - I have recorded through the A2D but didn't use the converter in it).

Probably the Prism Orpheus. I haven't heard it, but I can imagine that it's probably the best sounding FW interface out there.

That looks pretty cool, but how does the 312 preamp compare to the 512C?

They are the same preamp, different format, as far as I know.

Yeah, that was always my impression - really though, I don't know why ANYONE would spend the same amount of money for a 2-channel preamp as a lunchbox with 2 modules, unless they were planning on never buying another nice preamp again (and there are eq's and compressors available in the 500 series format too, though not nearly as many options...). A lunchbox is ~$500, modules are around $700-$800 each on average, you do the math.

I figured that the rack unit would be cheaper, but I guess API doesn't believe in ever giving people a break oh well!

Well the A2D had built in A/D converters, so that's why the price goes up, and they only offer a 4-channel analog-only rack unit in the form of the 3124+

yea man, the next pre i buy is going to be a 3124...next up after that will be some sort of 2-channel neve-ish pre, be it a vintech, great river, or even chameleon labs
