Middy deftones snare

I was listening to White Pony yesterday, and the snare seemed really middy and boxy somehow (in a good way).
Just really full sounding.
How would you go about if you wanted to achieve a similar snare sound in a mix?

use a voxengo curve eq blueprint on a boxy slate snare (for example steelydan)

Don't automatically reach for cutting the mids. and that may help

I think I read at one point that it was a Tama Bell Brass snare mic'd with a 57 (?). Abe's snares are often tuned pretty high; get a good metal snare and crank the hell out of it and you'll be much of the way there (now you just have to find a drummer who can live up to Abe's snare technique).

It also sounds like there's a decent amount of tasteful compression going on, though I have no idea what was used on that record - I've read that Terry Date was mixing on SSLs at that point so it could just be an SSL channel compressor. Who knows....

I'd also like to add that it sounds like he's using a considerable amount of muffling on that snare too. A cranked 13" metal snare with an Evans Genera Dry would probably do the job.
