Midi triggering vs Sound Replacing

This. I remember talking about this in some thread a looong time ago and now I got reminded about it again and how important this is. I use phase between real tracks / samples to create a different sound. You can really shape the kick drum just by toying around with the phase back and forth, same for any other drum for that matter.

you mean with like a, 360 degree variable phase plugin?

i use midi about half the time, and despite my pal Lasse's fears, i have no problems at all getting 100% phase accuracy when enhancing existing drum tracks. and i get it very quickly.... lay in the performance from MIDI, then one shift to align the phase, done.

granted, some soft-samplers are better with that than others... the worst i have is the original BFD. the best is Battery.

No. Manual alignment. I tend to hover the samples around the transients in small increments until they start to punch together the hardest. It's not an exact science, so doing this by hand will give you more flexibility than any automatic replacement plug-in.

interesting...

But if you move lets say the OH's to better suit with the snare, can't it result in worse harmony with the toms for example?

I've never really understood phase relationships between mics... except that it's really damn important and to listen for it and when it sounds right.

Do you simply zoom in max and with small movements move the recorded files one direction and see what happens?

Thanks
