The March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine includes a list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists as selected by the magazine's staff. "This is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique (although many players on our list have all of those arrows in their quiver)," the editors stress in the accompanying introduction. "It is, rather, a tribute to the great men who shit iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier."

well let's be glad they didn't add curt kobain on the top 10 or some shit like that. although he is a great song writer but is in no way on the same level as #42 on the list ;)

I'll accept Black Sabbath on the list definitely but not Jimmy Page. He's like my favorite guitarist ever, but Zeppelin is not metal. They were considered "heavy metal" back then, but the only rock & roll band that could really pass as metal is Sabbath, I think. I mean, for Christ's sake, Neil Young?! Adam Jones from Tool deserves the 50's, maybe, but he uses effects to mask a lot of stuff. He does have a cool style, though. Tom Morello is one of the worst guitarists of modern music. He isn't good at all. And Korn is there... Good Lord... Right above John Petrucci, too. *slits throat*

Joke of a list, to be honest. So much is done by the sheer popularity of some groups. Tool noted for guitars? Korn? Def Leppard over Opeth? Obviously the staffers arn't as 'metal' as we could've hoped.

Well I would consider the whole list a joke, I mean #23 is NIgel Tufnel from Spinal Tap. I love Spinal Tap, but come on, its not exactly a "real band" (yeah I know they do actually make their songs) it is for comedy above all else.

I honestly have no idea who makes these lists and what they base it on... C.C. Deville??? Just because people know someones name doesnt mean theyre a great guitarist. And in defense of Adam Jones, sure the guy uses lots of effects and stuff, but hes one hell of a guitarist. his stuff isnt difficult to play or anything, but its just a style that people have to appreciate, it takes you places mentally haha. Hes not #9 or anything, but hes really sweet. 26 and 27 are a microcosm of that list... Its pretty ridiculous. That mag needs a new staff.

Yeah, its sad that the guitarists of Korn are higher ranked than the more talented ones.

I don't really read much magazines or pay attention to them anyway..

Name one cover band that can play all of RATM songs. Tom Morello may not seem like the greatest guitarists but he's extreemly original in his style of playing making it tough to duplicate.
