Mikael should make a solo acoustic album

Theres plenty of folk artists out there that have done that sort of thing and I reckon it can often be boring but there are some artists that can pull it off very well and make it very interesting. I think Mikael would certainly be capable of this

A singer-songwriter thing? I think the two tracks on the re-issue of BWP really covered that well. Asking for any more would make the whole idea boring I think.

If all the tracks delivered the same quality of those two songs, then I would buy it for sure. I think "Patterns In The Ivy II" is almost better than anything of Damnation. And I thought Damnation was awesome.

Seeing that he is the sole composer in Opeth, it wouldn't be fair to the others guys to spend his creativity on himself. Opeth is a demanding band, and you don't wanna be spending your best riffs on side-project when you're the only one really writing music.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I love it, but as I said..

He could always incorporate solo tracks into Opeth albums. Even though Patterns In The Ivy II is only really Mikael, it is still an "Opeth" song. But yeah an overuse would almost be a let-down to the rest of the band. But I'd buy it anyway lol..

After I heard Opeth cover on Deep Purple, I said to myself ... what a
wonderful world... :) no, but I thought: this is what I want to hear when Mike
stop making progressive death... IF the guys break up. I don't want 'em to
break up ofcuze, but I mean when they get older!

There's nothing that stops Mike from making progrssive rock. And does these
vocals! man! it's great!

I don't agree with what was said about it being a letdown to Opeth if he made a solo album. Many artists have made solo albums whilst remaining in their own bands. It'd just be an interesting idea to hear a stripped-down album with only vocals and guitar.

the final part of hours of wealth where it is only mikael's voice and guitar with per on keys ... stuff like this will be present on next albums too I think, I hope so anyway! but a solo-album, I don't know ... perhaps someday in 10 years or so ...

has sörskogen released anything? and also, has the mendez/lopez side project/band released a demo or anything at all:?

I can't say I'm a fan of stripping everything down to just a vocal and a guitar. I'm an advocate of musical layers, movements etc. I don't see the technical and artistic difficulty in stripping everything down and simply just writing two seperate parts for an entire album. The true challenge and beauty in music, to me at least, is in creating texture, huge soundscapes, movements using as many things at your disposal as possible.

I often find that even Vox, Guitar, Bass, Keys, Drums are way too simple. So many things have already been done with that assortment of instruments.

^ I agree. I like complex, bombastic stuff. But I also like to listen to Ulver's Kveldssanger.

On-topic: I'd buy it, but I don't tink I would like him to go solo.

Barebones stuff can be pretty nice when done right. I think Steve von Till's (Neurosis vocalist/guitarist) solo albums are pretty stunning and they sound pretty much like what you'd get if you take Neurosis and strip it down to... almost nothing.

The problem with barebones acoustic stuff is that when there is almost no vehicle for just technical noodling the songwriting has to be spot on constantly. With more layered music it's easier for artists to get away with lapses in creativity by just filling up sections of the songs with... whatever, really.

I really like the acoustic tracks on the BWP reissue though. So I'm pretty sure Mike would have the skill to record a complete acoustic album that would sound interesting throughout.
