I realize you post occasionally, so there might be a chance you won't see this, but if you do I was curious as to what YOU feel is your greatest/strongest/favourite work that you pride yourself on? Either as an album as a whole or songs in particular. Thanks!

I just got Still Life the other day, and it's closing in on Blackwater Park to become my absolute favorite Opeth album, and I've only listened to it once!. Watershed is in either 2nd or 3rd place on my list.

Watershed is definitely a solid release. The Lotus Eaters is to me, the best track on the album, with Heir Apparent a close second. The only problem for me is the tracks are hit-and-miss. I find myself enjoying some more than others. Thats why I thought it was an interesting question. What album does he like overall.

I think his opinion of a few of the albums is jaded by memories of the recording process. I personally believe Blackwater Park to be the absolute aural masterpiece, but I would bet money Mike picks Still Life.

Still Life is a good album, but I just don't like the tone(?) of the acoustic guitars. For example I really didn't like Face of Melinda, until I heard it live, and now it's one of my favorite soft songs.

I found this...

It's quite difficult to say. Some songs are my faves because of a 3 second passage that just ties it all together so nice, like the song "Blackwater park" has a real smooth passage that I just think is fantastic! Other than that "Isolation years" and "Hope leaves" are my fave calm songs I guess. "Harvest" is really good too I think. That guitar solo is my best ever! If I may say so myself....

"Deliverance" is one of the ultimate Opeth songs I believe, "April ethereal" is nice..."The moor" definately has it's moments but the mix dropout is so annoying for me to listen to. "Benighted" is nice but solo's too low in the mix...overall "Still life" has too much reverb on the drums but the songs are killer...probably one of my fave Lp's! "Ghost of perdition" is definately up there although I remember at first listen I thought it was like a freakout explosion of fucked up ideas...love it now tho'!

From the very early material I'd have to say "Under the weeping moon" since we've been playing it a lot lately and...gosh, "The night and the silent water". I need to change my profile thingie on the webpage. This song is very emotional to play live, on record I don't really like it, but live it just kinda overflows with emotion. Makes my happy actually, I always believed in that song but was so dissapointed with the recording.

Thanks for asking!
Cheers
Mike

^thanks so much for posting this!

yeah i noticed how he changed his fave song list from TNATSW being his least fave opeth song to the live version being his fave. ultimately my fave song as well, the roundhouse tapes version is so unfuckingbelievable, but i do still like to listen to the album version too, mostly just so i can hear that acoustic riff at the end.

Most musicians will always say their newest album is their favourite, because it's newer and fresher and because they've been playing songs from the older records every night for years. It's a very boring answer from a fan's perspective but a totally valid one.

Why there is so many thread since a few days whith the question begining by "Mikael what is your ....?" Is it the Chiken Pox ?

Yeah, I'm waiting for someone to ask:
"Mikeal: How do you like your eggs?"

...Or something like that...

He has given a few different answers over the years in interviews, which is fair enough, opinions change, I was always under the impression it was bwp. But in reading the 5.1 Still Life booklet, don't quote me on this, as I don't have it with me to check but I recall he saying there Still Life is his favorite. But yes he has said more recently that Watershed is becoming his new favorite, but that could just be honeymoon love.
