Mikaels new solo project

hip hop you fools

honestly, why guess anyway. just wait until some information is released about it.

lol i made this joke a long time ago, its Akerfeldt and 50cent man... the new videos gonna come out with Akerfeldt and fiddy rollin down the street in some blinged-out limo, akerfeldt with a pimpstick and mad grillz yo:kickass: :erk:

i have nothing against rap. im not into that gangsta stuff but i occassionally enjoy some rapcore stuff (ratm, cypress hill) and some experimental stuff including shadow, vadim and clouddead.

HOWEVER i dont get one thing.

how do people turn from rap to metal? whats the story there?

Well I was initially thrust into the rap envirnonment in high school. Although I was pretty much raised in an environment that constantly played Carlos Santana tunes almost daily. I really enjoyed Santana and still do. But after high school I was listening to a jam on the radio and it was "Jeremy" from Peal Jam. I made my way to the nearest record store and bought the album "Ten." Long story short..my evolution to metal was somewhat as follows not mentioning the less significant artists in between:

Rap to Pearl Jam to Dave Matthews to Metallica to Opeth

I get the impression Steve Wilson wants to do something really heavy and Mike probably wants to do something mellow, so will be interesting to see what they come up with.

That's something I haven't thought about... and very true.

I think it'll be good for Mike to get away from the Opeth sound and create something different for once.

it's gotta be something very classic prog, given his tastes and influences.

and that Sorskogen project never did get beyond a track or two so I bet that bug's still in him (although some of the melodies from Mordet I Grottan resurfaced in To Rid the Disease).

whatever it is, it's going to be something special.
-gg
np: Dimmu Borgir - For All Tid

Dont know if youve ever heared any of Porcupine Tree albums but I can tell you that the two bands have some connection.
i dont know exactly why, maybe its because Wilson has been producing few albums for opeth, but those bands have a special sound that you can.. err.. how to put it... say, "connect" between. there is some imagination between the two.

so dont know wheather a side project with SW will take him so much away from the "opethy" sound.

should be a good one anyhow :)
my prediction is a Damnation-like-album

U find out how lame a simple drumbeat repeated a zillion times, with someone talkin to it sounds.

Well Steven had a song on his myspace called "Cut Ribbon" that was listed as a project with Mikael Akerfeldt. I remember Mikael mentioned the song a while ago, probably during his time helping out on Deadwing. The song is pretty much what you'd expect: psychedelic at points, metal, interesting riffs I suppose. But I think it was programmed drums and more so a SW track, so I can't say its a good barometer of what they'll all produce. As much as people shit on portnoy, with Wilson producing (probably), it'll be hard for him to fuck it up and I actually like a lot of his beats for LTE.

^That track was a demo specific to the MÅ/SW project. All SW w/ programed drums, etc. The Ålmighty is currently writing... writing for everything. Lots of work will get done for both the next Opeth record and the side project... but I can't see any release other than the DVD in '07.

My 2 cents

how do u get this info? You should make a thread that only you can post in with news on the latest opeth news. we all get more info from this forum then from there myspace or main site. IMO.:)

hence the news thread idea;)

so mikes writing for the side project now as well as the new opeth stuff? should i thank anna for that or mr. s for sharing it?:p

No one is looking for "thanks".... just know that I wouldn't post anything without being confident in what I'm posting regardless of my exact source/sources.

Edit: Sorry but I don't think there's any need for a "News" thread. The official site is the definitive source for all news OPETH. If there is other news that comes out on the forum here and there it will more than likely appear in threads that discuss a specific subject like the DVD thread or this one for example. Mike may pop in now and again and volunteer info which will obviously be "Confirmed" and reliable so consider that a benefit of being a regular reader/poster of this forum. I'm not a news source as such but do try to be informed as best as I can and can usually get information verified if I'm unsure. I'm going to do that for the details of the DVD's release for example....
