Good for Conor, I guess. I can't say I saw anything that makes me think he's got a better chance of beating Khabib this time around, but I guess it will print some paper for the fighters and UFC.

I do wonder if the shoulder thrusts he bust Cowboy’s nose with are his attempted anti-measure versus grapplers. I know other fighters do it but not really as many as you’d think and I’ve never noticed him do it before.

I don’t think he can beat Khabib but tbh I didnt expect him to just instantly beat Cerrone down. Even seemed like a late stoppage by the ref because he basically just curled up when he went down and stayed there. Got tagged in the head a few extra times after that.

Conor is nowhere near as good as some people think. His mouth and drama are what have elevated his status among the average mma newblet, most of which are probably WWF fans. Dana knows how to "build" a name and sell wolf tickets. Mcgregor has no chance of beating Khabib and getting a win over Cerrone means absolutely nothing ... the man was never a top level fighter, has been out of his prime for a while now and had lost his two previous fights before facing Conor.

Also i think that phantom knee to the face did more damage to Cerrone than those shoulder strikes everyone keeps yapping about.

There's always the "If you get tagged, you get tagged," aspect of combat sports that makes surprising results not that surprising in retrospect, and MMA makes getting tagged pretty damned likely if you keep bucking the tiger.

UFC1 is currently on youtube in its entirety. Had never seen old-school UFC up until just recently. I actually like it a lot more than the modern stuff. I quite like the concept of differing martial arts being pitted against each other, more interesting than two MMA fighters going at it. Understandable that the sport will never return to this format, as even by UFC2 fighters were beginning to smarten up & become more rounded.

The sport is only now really maturing to the point that it isn't high stakes rock, paper, scissors with brain damage on the side.

I do miss the old school shoot fighters from the early days, like Tank Abbott. It's a science now, and I sometimes get nostalgic for the days of just fucking tough dudes whaling on each other.
