To those of you who don't have a proper recording room and use band's rehearsal spaces/garages/whatever to record: what does your rig contain??

a macbook,
a 002 and a focusrite 4 channel pre or an api 3124+
and some mics,
but i normally rent out studios

i did some on-location tracking a while back, and used the same shit there i did at home - my computer, mackie onyx 1640, and some mics. oh, and i think i used one of those cheap-ass ART DI boxes also.

PowerBook G4. In the rack it's: Furman power conditioner, MOTU 8Pre interface, Behringer ADA8000 via lightpipe into the MOTU and then a Glyph GT 80GB drive daisy-chained into the MOTU.

Mostly DDrum Pro triggers, but a matched pair of Rode NT5's, two Rode NT-2a's, SM57 and, if need be, Audix D6 for the kick. I only focus on death/grind/black metal, etc. so mic'ing the toms isn't a necessity for these lame-ass bands around here.

^I've always wondered what the power conditioner really is for... must be good as many people have one and it's not on the cheaper side... so i guess it's usable for more than just distributing the power to your rack devices...?
which exact model do you have?

well...

1)they distribute power

2)they calim to distribute it much better than if you plugged all your shit into a regular power strip/extension cord

3)they protect your gear from getting toasted in the event of a power surge

I got a pc i build "not sure of stats at the moment" but then i use a digi002 with behringer ada8000 via light pipe to digi 002 and also a behringer power play 8 channel headphones amp all in a nice 4 space rack.

I also bring some moving blankets just case room is way way to bright and I'm building acoustic bass traps and might drag those along when i record. I'm doing all my work mobile right now.......

You know what i really need now that i think about it, a mic stand bag! I hate moving mic stands around in car and stuff and would be nice if they were all in 1 bag....

i got that deal with those cheap on-stage stands that come with the bag, and i love that bag. it's one of those things that just makes things a bit easier.

Also, from what I've heard from my Audio Arts Production teacher at school, the more expensive ones regulate and stabilize the voltage coming from the wall, which is rarely consistent (I'm sure you've all noticed the lights flicker when the A/C comes on, for example), and those sags in power I would imagine could really adversely effect the performance of all gear, especially amps (whether pre-, power-, or guitar).

I have been using a Metric Halo Mobile I/O with a Behringer ADA8000 connected to my macbook.
Ive just booked a rehearsal space to do a location recording however the the guy that owns the place has offered me the use of his Otari Radar for the session. Im pretty pleased with that.

this is the best part of my portable rig

mint

i wish my shit fit in a little bag, lol

that being said, milk crates are your best friend for this type of thing

I got a big rubber maid box and i keep my 8 channel snake and all my Mic cables and headphones and Mic's and just everything i need to bring....

Hey what do you guys use for monitoring sound on location?

Ive been dragging my little Altec Lansing computer speakers with me and just using a 1/8in to 1/4in adapter and running from headphones jack on digi002. Any better ideas like maybe good headphones or something....

i plug the main outs into the bands pa (if available) so they can check what they just recorded if they want to. for checking the sound itself i use my k240s.

I got a big rubber maid box

OT - Back in the first known Ice Age when I was an assitant engineer at the big studios, some rappers decided to have a huge party on their last session. They brought in a bunch of high-class hookers and porn stars (and alcohol and other illicit materials) and went nuts. Of course, the runners were left to cleanup the mess at 4am. There was one sweet and pretty little mama from Switzerland who was on the cleanup crew, and unfortunately was assigned to the bathroom detail. She screams upon entering the loo, and naturally the rest of us went to see what was wrong only to be met by a giant Magnum condom full of man-made mayo laying on the sink. I busted a quick 180 and headed back to the control room thinking, "I'm so glad I'm not a runner anymore!"

Once the morning crew came in and the story got to them, the girl who cleaned the mess had earned a new nickname - Rubber Maid. We thought it was really funny and that name stuck with her until her visa expired!

Just thought I'd share...
