I can hear a clear Meshuggah influence on Opeth's Deliverance and Ghost Reveries albums, most noticeably on the GR track Beneath the Mire, in the final minute or so. It's very similar to the end of the Meshuggah track Beneath.

I'm hardly a Meshuggah fanboy, or fan even, but I think it's silly to dismiss then due to overhype.

I find the mechanism and style during the end and beginning of beneath the remire to be a lot different than say how meshuggah does it. The ending of reverie/harlequin forest has an offbeat ending also. I wish Opeth would stay clean of these things because I don't find things like this to be intelligent musical interesting or creative, but rather cliche. I think since out of a 15 year carrer they have only done it a few times it's ok and they probably will not do it again. Reverie/Harlequin Forest is an amazing song and then the ending riff comes and you are thinking WHY.

A simply great band, very anti-political and very tribal, which takes a lot of guts to do.

Interesting that you have highlighted two of the qualities that turned Sepultura to total shit.
