Most underrated recording gear.

Looks like a cool piece of gear, but is this something you reach for all the time? I mean, when I track the bass it's always with new strings, and I capture a DI, so I don't have trouble with a lack of low end to work with from the original source. I just can't imagine using a subharmonic process unless it's something poorly recorded, but I could be wrong...

It has alot of uses that you really don't think of till you have one. It's great for adding weight to bass when a bass player is running around the neck alot..

Korn Uses em to get a separate sub track for all their guitar and bass tracking.

Back on topic for me there's a few cool things:

-Shure Green Bullet----awesome drum room mic

-Sony Oxford Reverb----as someone else said, it's amazing especially for early reflections.

Honestly????

Best bit of "kit" I discovered recently... ValhallaRoom reverb. The thing fucking SLAYS. On EVERYTHING. I'm pretty much only using that reverb now.

+1 for the RNC.
Sontronix STC1s. Amazing mics for the money, have got far better sounds on acoustic and OH than cheap chinese mics have any right to. Great success.

Plugs:
Voxengo soniformer. I dont see much talk about it, and its weird like most voxengo stuff, and way overpowered, but has the potential to make or break a mix.
Similar story for Gliss EQ, which is a frankly bizarre, but sometimes extremely usefull EQ/multiband expander/comp...thing. Use carefully, treat it right, it will reward you.
Stillwell Rocket, major tom and 1973EQ. And Bad buss mojo. I absolutely love that thing.
Toneboosters track essentials. There is no reason whatsoever you shouldnt get these plugs, right now. They're good, easily comparable to, even better than the voxengo and stillwell 'bang for buck', at £20 for the pack. Do eeeet, DO EEET NAO! http://www.toneboosters.com/trackessentials/ far more than worth it for the EQ alone IMO.
