i'm currently using an old-as-dirt microsoft mouse with my daw (protools) that i'm looking to replace. i see a lot of guys using trackball mice but i'm not sure i could ever really be comfortable with something like that. that said, what should i check out?

Logitech MX518, cheap and great imo.

Using USB Overdrive to program the buttons (you can set them to do different things in different programs too which is handy)

In Pro tools:

One of the side buttons selects the zoom tool, the other selects the smart tool.
Clicking my scroll wheel switches between the edit and mix window.
Pressing the button in the middle zooms out to view the whole session.

These shortcuts have really quickened my workflow. Depending on what you need you can program any of the buttons to do whatever you want for your own workflow.

The adjustable resolution is also really good for when you're doing detailed editing and need precision. The mouse is also very comfortable which is nice on long sessions.

reallly like mighty mouse and magic mouse. though magic mouse gets screwy and jumps about the screen when cpu is at 50% plus

Another vote for Logitech MX5XX series mice. I've had a MX510 for years and years, hasn't quit on me yet. Doubles as a solid gaming mouse too, it's what got me through my "professional" Counter-Strike days.

Using a Logitech Performance Mouse MX myself, it's really comfortable (which is the most important factor for me) and the amount of buttons is good too. Too bad that this doesn't have the second scroll wheel the older model used to have, but I can live with that since the sideways scrolling is ok.

I cannot get along with Mighty Mice, we have those at school and they just don't fit in my hand at all and I get occasional wrist pains with them.

i'm gasing for an expert mouse, I feel that as time has passed my hand is really suffering from every day mouse using, it's a strange feeling, like a stiff feeling on the lower part of the palm, don't know how to describe it but it's kinda worrying, and I feel it only on my "mouse hand"

Has anyone tried out the kensington SlimBlade?

I using Kensington expert mouse (trackball) since something like 1 months. Can't be more happy and can't back to standard mouse now:D
But you need to really work a little with it first (something like 1hour) before put your mouse on trash...

Magic Mouse FTW. I don't have any problems with mine when I'm running high CPU loads either, maybe that's an isolated issue with your system Greyskull

I'm with greyskull - i think the magic mouse is the worst tracking mouse I've ever used. Its choppy, unreliable, etc. And this is on my mac pro, macbook pro, macbook, imac, etc... Not an isolated issue. I have 3 of them too... And I'm a HUGE apple fanboy. The mighty mouse sucks too because the mminute the ball gets dirty, it's all over. Great design, nice idea, but horrible execution on both of these products.

Logitech mx series is the way to go for me.
