Who has got one and which one?
I guess 1 GB might be enough if just think a bit what you might be wanting to hear when travelling on a longer journey!? What do think?
Is an iPod a must or a any alternatives equal?

Im using a 60GB iPod Video - absolutely love it. Got about 40GB on it so far, but I'd definately recommend something an iPod of some sort. If you want 1GB of storage I'd go for the nano. I prefer to have all my stuff on my iPod so everything is accessable.
i'm diehard Ipod. my father tried several other types recently... he was very anti-apple for some unknown reason... but every one he bought and tried had some problem. eventually he bought a 40GB Apple Ipod and he loves it. so much in fact that he switched from PC's to Mac altogether and now owns an iMac G5 that he loves.

This sony is really cool... I think it's the best looking mp3 player...

I've never owned an ipod myself, but like everybody I have friends who do.
Aesthetically, I don't really care for the ipod... So, I went for the sony.

Plus the sony has like the batteries from hell, they never died on me.
(I have no idea how the ipod compares to that tho)

But you have to use sony's software to transfer music on it. I wished it was
as easy as an external hard drive... plug... drag&drop... unplug...

Still, I like my A3000 more than I like most of my friends.

Always living up to that signature I see :D

I just have a Sony mp3 player. It has a flash memory of 512mb and isn't upgradable. I mean in general that's okay for me, it can hold about 5 or 6 albums, depending on quality (192k average) and that's usually enough to hold my interest on trips.

I opted out of the iPod option coz it was way overkill for my needs.

Forgot to mention that - iTunes is very good for syncing up your iPod with your PC/Mac. Dead quick and really simple. I love keeping an eye on play counts and stuff, and making smart playlists is cool also. I only have old experiences with Sony's software, and I had a horrid experience with it. This was a couple of years back, and Im sure it will have been fixed A LOT now.

It has, but I'm still kind of against this whole proprietary thing, but shit, it looks
so damn good... (And I hate itunes... I don't know why, I just hate the damn thing)
iTunes is the most elegant solution i've found.. too bad you hate it. it's very powerful, easy, and very aesthetically pleasing. but then you thought that ugly Sony player looked better than an iPod... to each his own. but i will always have an easier time with managing my digital media library than you will as long as you use that Sony software and player.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies so far!

Wow, some of you got the REALLY BIG iPods! Don't you have many songs on there that you never listen to?

Of course the bigger the cheaper but do you think storage space is worth the money it costs? ATM my favorite is the 1 GB Nano - I know that I am (by far) not able to put all my files on it but maybe lower price is a good trade-off against some up- and downloading of songs to and from the computer??!

What about those (more or less) No-Name players that come for 30 bucks für 512 - 1024 MB? I mean you can use freeware to convert / download / whatever songs and still upload them to the cheapo player...

BTW: I like iTunes a lot and the iPod definitelly has got some style to it! :)

I suppose it depends how you want to use it. I personally want all my CD collection on there, and considering I have filled 40GB so far, it already beats getting any iPod with a smaller HD. But if I only put my favourite songs on it, then it would be entirely different. I prefer to have the complete album though.

I really like iTunes, its simple, and does what its supposed to well. Its integration with the iPod is great too.

I also hate the sony software, and I only use it for transfering... I keep my
digital media library clean and simple by hand, like we used to when we weren't
so goddamn lazy. :)

Ugly Sony all the way ! (Well, not really "all the way" mainly just the player way...)

The only bad thing about Ipod is that they stole the interface from creative
Too bad a great company like apple doing these things.
  nice joke kaomao. I love my iPod. iTunes is great for a lot of stuff. There are some things that you can't find using it, other than that, it rocks. The iPod goes everywhere with me and has withstood a lot already. W00t for iPods!:headbang: :loco:

Another vote for iPod. Mine is 2-3 years old (20gig) and works like a charm. Itunes is very intuitive to use and organizes all my music for me.:)

my distaste for ipod comes from two places:

1. the consumerism fadness of it. like google, like myspace, like mtv and 'pimped out cars', these things are absurdly popular, and with very little reason. i'll give apple credit for their highly successful advertising campaign. it worked. but not on me.

and

2. iTunes. i've been a winamp user for years, and after curiosity finally enticed me to give iTunes a try, i found not only did it not live up to the standards i was accustomed to with winamp, but that i downright hated it! the interface, the organization, the supported filetypes and worst of all (and most important to me) the media library. to top it all off, i really disliked the integration of mp3 distribution sites, and other such 'peripherals' that i could not elect *not* to install. unfortunately, this consumerism too has caught on, and even winamp now has begun to embed these annoying features.

what this has to do with the actual ipod? not that much... as for the machine itself, i will say it looks robust, yet 60gigs doesn't cover my music collection, nor would i buy one at the price they sell for. so currently i use a sony mp3cd player, and it does the job well enough for me, especially considering all the money i *didn't* spend on it.

I'm a proud owner of a 40 gig iPod. Time to clear something up, though...

Actually you're wrong about this. Creative is not going to win, and Apple is going to royally own them in court. Apple has also countersued.

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/06/08/apple_ipod_countersuit_against_creative/

Creative is just upset that Apple is more succesful. Both companies had similar ideas around the same time, it was just where the industry was headed. Apple made a better product, and the rest is history.

At the end of the day Creative is like Dave Mustaine - always bitter about being #2.

I've heard good things about the Cowon players.
http://www.cowonglobal.com/

They also play FLAC files. I'm not sure how many others actually do. I'm pretty sure the iPod doesn't.

If you haven't heard, Microsoft is planning to come out with a line of portable players as well. They're hoping to make quite a dent into the market like they did with the Xbox. They're ever rumouring to offer free downloads of everything you've downloaded off the iTunes store for switching.
