Do you think of it as an output for different types of ideas, or just spreading ones creativity too thin? i mean, guys like vintersorg or hellhammer, i bet if they stuck with just one project it would probably develop its sound faster/better. but then again i could b wrong. If Mikael had a million groups, maybe his opeth songwriting would turn mediocre or something, but i dunno, what do you guys think

Steve Wilson has a lot of side projects (Blackfield, Bass Communion, I.E.M.) and I think he does a great job with each of them and of course also with Porcupine Tree.

None of Dan's work is half-assed or shit, he puts everything into all his projects which all turn out great! I don't think he's capable of running out of ideas!

Paul Gilbert has several side projects and he pwns in every single one of them.
He is now collaborating (yet again) with Portnoy, Sheehan and two others (whom I can't recall at the moment) on a Who reunion.

KFK

Peter Tägtgren of course, but he can't keep up with Dan Swanö. Also Tägtgren's CD- productions (Immortal, Destruction etc.) don't satisfy me...

No, I think being involved with different musicians can only increase the range of musical ideas you can work with. And Vintersorg is awesome, so obviously its not a bad thing.

I think it just means more people helping to make better music, although there are excepetions. Dave Grohl on Probot, well that was just brilliant, and his work on "With Teeth" made him a better musician which we cleary see on the Foo fighters last labum. Argueably Trent Reznor, came off badly from that particular union.

Probably the best example of having inumerable siode projects is Mike Patton. Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Fantomas and Tomahawk are just the band he's credited as having been in or started, alonside tens of other side projects.

Of course he's produced album for artist as diverse as Bjork. And he's rumoured to have dozen of other side projects and to have produced dozen of other artists.

When your at that level of genius as i feel very few are (yes i'd put Arkfelt up there with Patton) then i don't feel your ever spreading your artist prowess too thin. Because there's so much to fucking spread mate.

Really? I didn't know that. What are his other bands called?

And I think being in lots of bands is a good idea... if you're good enough to do it.

Besides Arch Enemy, he's in: Witchery, Mercyful Fate, (ex)-Sinergy, Illwill, Dismember, Facelift, and Spiritual Beggars(with good ol' Per nonetheless ;)).
