50 years from now, will a band like Opeth be noted for their musical output or their measure of influence? What do you think? No cop-out answers like "both"!

I say musical output, as most bands aren't as songwriting driven and go for "the riff", and the mellow jazzy feel doesn't seem to me like it would get big in the metal community...thoughts?

For a band to be 'great', they have to have:

Big, fuzzy hair:

bad teeth:

Tight, cowprint pants:

Freckles:

Groupies that want to have a picture with you (and/or have your children):

 i bet you were waiting for a time to put that in...

anyway, a great band in 50 years time will be one that people will remember, they wont be great musicaly maybe, but its gonna be people like madonna and all, all that shit.

opeth will be remembered maybe for being one of the best bands around, by me and loads of other people, thats all that matters.

CPA: AMEN!

To me, a great band is one that inspires and moves me.

The General Populace would be hard pressed to call Opeth great, since it wouldn't necessarily appeal to the masses, but I think they'll get their credit in the metal community.

I think they'll end up being a very strong influence in the coming decades.

any band who is SINCERE in their music is good. honestly, it shows. there are those who are in it for chicks, fame, money and drugs, and there are those who grew up listening to great bands in their youth and wanted to be like them.

Hehehe. You can see a Marlboro Light flip-top box peeking out of Mikael's pocket in the "groupie pic". :)
