I think Maiden's management should run a poll to see what 10-20 songs Maiden fans want to see tabbed BY THE BAND. For instance , when 2 Minutes to Midnight is tabbed, Adrian could write a paragraph or two about what he was doing during the solo. Every song could have a preface describing what type of guitars, amps, pedals, ect was used on the song. The lyricist of each song could also chime in on the inspiration behind the words or any amusing anecdotes about each song. Just imagine having Dave,Adrian, Janick and Steve tab out and talk specifically about each song, solo, bridge, ect ect.

I mean seriously, if the book was really in-depth, wouldn't you pay upwards to $35 for one.

Also Martin Birch, Kevin Shirley plus Steve and Nigel Green(doubt they would want Will Malone) could write about the production. Perhaps they could even get an impartial(ie. non Maiden fan) person who is knowlegeable about music theory to write about the scales, musical technique and theory behind the songs. They could get someone like robert Fripp(King Crimson is even on Santuary Records) or Steve Vai(used to transcribe Frank Zappa's music by ear as a teenager) for this.

As a pathetic guitarist, I take umbridge at that.

(and I don't even know what umbridge is)

great idea. maybe we can have them explain in detail how they wipe their asses and if Nicko looks into a mirror occasionally? :p

would you be disturbed about them speaking of how hard they wanked it before getting the inspiration for the song?

if so, take this form *hands you piece of paper* and go directly to GEIGHland.

Mark, come on over and I'll show you how to learn a song. By ear. Takes maybe a half hour of your time to learn a song. I know how most people who go online dont seem to have that much time away from looking at porn and downloading music to actually learn their favorite drop M tuned song. :)

But in all honestly practice is the best thing for you.

In some songs I can pick it up sort of easy but I usually have a hard time doing it by ear.

Thats what its all about tho man. WORKING for it. Shit dont come easy!

Lets say Dave Murray quits Iron Maiden and Steve walks up to you knowing you play guitar and asks you to fill in on tour for Dave. What do you do when you dont know the songs? Do you ask Steve HArris for a tab book? He'd tell you to fuck off and then find someone who can learn the songs. You can call me an asshole but its plain truth.

Wow, you must be a bitter little man considering nothing I wrote could possibly provoke that sort of response from a well-adjusted person.

Anyways...I too can play the majority of Maiden tunes I hear by ear but I'd also enjoy getting the detailed instructions from the actual musicians in the band. You might notice that even bands with brilliant musicians in them(ie. Opeth) can't really seem to capture the "Maiden sound" when they do covers of their music. I think a tab book like the one I suggested could help beginners to the guitar and/or Maiden, get started fast on the road to playing good guitar(without any guesswork) while helping advanced guitarist who are familiar with Maiden get some of the finer points down. Also, just reading the band's thoughts on their own music in detail could be very interesting.

Is it just me or wouldn't it be better to have a band like Opeth do a cover of Maiden that doesnt sound like Maiden but rather like Opeth. I hate covers by bands that sound exactly like the original song. If I want to hear a cover it better sound like the band's sound, like Cradle of Filth's version of Hallowed.

If we leave it to the idiots who comprise the vast majority of Iron Maiden fans, then we'll get all the really easy, single-riff songs like 2 Minutes, Running Free, Run To The Hills, Flight Of Icarus, and The Wicker Man
instead of great, multi-layered, intricate classics like Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, To Tame A Land, Deja Vu, Alexander The Great, The Nomad, Dream Of Mirrors, The Duellists, Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, and The Prophecy.

In short, shitty idea.

Let the guitarists pick the songs.

True. If songs like those were on there fans would just say fuck it and go back to playing Running Free.

I too think bands dont need to capture Maidens sound. Actually just get the same gear and recording process and your there. But each band should have their own unique twist on a song. Unless Its those shit songs from Call To Irons. Yet there ARE a few good ones. Where Eagles Dare sounds pretty badass.
