Hey guys i did a little shootout today on the amps in the studio
This is going to be a blind shootout for kicks and giggles.

Amp A http://files.getdropbox.com/u/749671/Tone test/amp a.mp3
Amp B http://files.getdropbox.com/u/749671/Tone test/amp b.mp3
Amp C http://files.getdropbox.com/u/749671/Tone test/amp c.mp3
Amp D http://files.getdropbox.com/u/749671/Tone test/amp d.mp3
Amp E http://files.getdropbox.com/u/749671/Tone test/amp e.mp3

All the amps were all valve heads into a mesa 4x12 miced with a 57 into my interface.

All heads boosted with an od 808 using the exact same settings for the sake of the comparison.

The riff is from take this oath by killswitch (as if you wouldn't know this already ) doubled tracked by my buddie into my bss 133 d.i and re-amped using the my original re-amp box.

We tried to just get the amps sounding the best we could in the room and this is what we came up with.

Oh and im aware that the hum is super gay im looking into the problem and going to try and sort it before i do any other shootouts/re-amping was kinda/very hungover doing this lol so didnt try to hard to find out what was causing the crappy hum.

Il reveal all in a few days time.

Ha they all sound shit but it was a quick test and that ground loop was distracting but you can still make out the different characters of the amps which was the point i guess.

Right well not much interest in this one but for anyone who wants to know the amps used were as follows;

Amp A = Peavey 6505
Amp B = Mesa Dual Rectifier
Amp C = Laney Gh100l
Amp D = Peavey Ultra 120
Amp E = Engl Powerball

I personally think the 6505 and dual rec slayed the rest for this style but i was suprised by the laney and not the recorded tone but how it sounded in the room it ripped our faces off really cool live tone from that amp.

You can really hear how much compression the powerball has as the hiss is way louder on that amp compared to the others you can see this visually on the waveform also. (I need to ditch this amp already)

Im kinda meh about the ultra its a very strange kind of distortion on that amp gets very harsh quickly and is super tight in a bad way

i liked C, followed by E...C won out in the clarity dept. perhaps you should've used a bit less gain on E

Yea i we went with the lead gain Chanel on the powerball which i never did before as it seemed to suit the riff better in the room but turned to mush under the mic oh well

also the mesa (B) is a little undergained

Please post!

Done:)
