Name albums that are badly dated

funny you mention deliverance cause I had to open the session yesterday for stems for rock band. Possibly one of the worst recordings I've had to deal with and I think the mix came out great considering what was there.

did you only mix it andy? who recorded it?

edit: disregard that i just remembered i have the cd
fredrik nordstrom, fredrik reymerdahl and steven wilson eh

i blame steven wilson hurrhurr

no di's, no natural kick, only 2 ohs, i dont think there was even ride or china.
Steven only worked on the clean trippy parts and the stuff he did was really cool. They tracked the drums in some "analogue" studio where nothing worked properly

As much as I hate to say it because they are one of my favorite bands of all time...
Fates Warning NO EXIT.

That drum sound!

The tinny guitars drenched in 80's reverb.

The EVERTHING drenched in 80's reverb!

The Ovation acoustic guitar....drenched in 80's reverb.

LOL, how about Perfect Symmetry? I thought that album sounded like crap the day I bought it in 90 or whenever......

ooh that reminds me
paradise lost - draconian times
ugh the production

What ?!?!

That album sounds big, & dynamic. The drums stand out, as do the guitar tones. Nicw slight gothic atmosphere too, with excellent use of reverb. What don't you like about that production ?

I'd much rather listen to productions from the 80s and early 90s. Back when dynamics didn't mean "Loud as fuck"

The loudness war is horrible.

I think album production reached an sonic apex around 1992-1996, and then things just started getting louder, louder, & louder. At first start of the loudness wars, it wasnt so bad, as you can mainly tell only by the limiting being employed. Now, during the past few years we have had albums that end up stupid loud where you hear the digital clipping all over the place. Albums that probably had a great production (Nightwish "Dark Passion Play", AIC "Black Gives Way To Blue" - come to mind) get tainted with over compression, clipping and limiting. I cant even play that NW album on on ipod. If I engage an EQ, forget about it.... it sounds like a crumbling mesh of distortion. I even gain stage mp3's for my media players, so that I have about 6-8 dbs of headroom for me to engage EQ. Sometimes even that doent work because the original source on these "new" releases is already distortigng/clipping. Fun.

it might be the slight gothic atmosphere and the reverb? ;)

You obviously don't get what Paradise Lost are about then. Draconian still sounds amazing today as does Icon. Watch the "Over the Madness" documentary and you'll hear Greg Macintosh list PL's gothic influences.:err:

Love the dated sound but only where it creates a mood that accompanies the music like Celtic Frost - Morbid Visions or Autopsy - Mental Funeral.
Stuff that's completely drenched in reverb for the sake of it (read: cuz it was popular then) I find very difficult to take in.
Albums for me that sound dated in a bad way are
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Metallica - RTL
Megadeth - So Far, So Good, So what! (original version, not the remix/remastered)
Sepultura - Schizophrenia

Classic albums they are but just can't bring myself to listen from cover to cover with some of them.

nah in all fairness id say youre right, i dont really get them.
saw them live with opeth on the GR tour and they were okay though. frontman was good

Slayer - Hell Awaits
Metallica - RTL
Megadeth - So Far, So Good, So what! (original version, not the remix/remastered)
Sepultura - Schizophrenia

Fitting selection. Reverb drenched vocals on RTL don't bother me though. I still like it's sound better than MOP.

I think "...Justice" is one of these unique sounding albums that transcend time rather well due to its uniqueness. I know, some people can hardly stomach it but I love that ultra dry sound on that record.

Funny thing is that album doesn't bother as much as No Exit. I really like Zonder's drum sound on Perfect Symmetry, I like the bass and vocals aren't too bad, production wise.
The guitar sound, well... Weren't both of those Albums Gallien Krueger (sp?) amps?

But I jest, overall that album doesn't irk me like No Exit does. And I listened to Guardian yesterday, not that horrid remaster, still a classic album.
