New Alice In Chains

You know what I think is one of the coolest things about this release? The fact that we're all so completely different people here with extremely varied tastes ranging from all extremes. What some people live for in here is exactly the very thing that others loathe with all their scorn and being. We are so polarized by each other, yet this album has seemingly united us all, if I may use that term without sounding too Manowar-ish.

Even people like Max who never once even gave a thought to AIC and don't like any of their past stuff (and who is also very critical of music in any form) merely said that he didn't get what the big deal was. He thought it was just "mediocre", which coming from him is like an admission akin to the Pope saying that God doesn't exist. I always, always use Max as a litmus test for just about everything these days.

It's just that damn good.

Guitar tuned to Eb.

If I'm not mistaken, they're of course Dmin (variation), as it's the saddest chord, Bmin, A variation, E and during the bridge there are some chord variations before returning to the regular four chords. The variations during the pre-chorus I'll just post. I really suck at naming chords. You can figure out the rhythm by listening.

First Chord D minor variation. He could be playing the same notes but letting the high ones ring out but it's difficult to hear it because the acoustic isn't up front in the mix. I prefer the sound of the D minor power chord instead of the full chord for this song like this:

D minor

|------------|------------|
|------------|------------|
|7-----------|------------|
|7-----------|------------|
|5-----------|------------|
|------------|------------|

but you can also do this:

|0-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|
|7-----------|------------|
|7-----------|------------|
|5-----------|------------|
|------------|------------|

Bmin

|2-----------|------------|
|3-----------|------------|
|4-----------|------------|
|4-----------|------------|
|2-----------|------------|
|------------|------------|

A variation, you can also play it as a power chord but I prefer this because it rings out really nice and clear
|0-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|
|2-----------|------------|
|2-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|

E

|0-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|
|1-----------|------------|
|2-----------|------------|
|2-----------|------------|
|0-----------|------------|

Ok now during the bridge there's a variation. You're gonna play Dmin, Bmin, A, and then you're gonna play this chord before you start the process all over again...the only time you do this is the bridge before the restart of the verse and right before the very last chord of the song at the very end:

|------------|------------|
|------------|------------|
|6-----------|------------|
|6-----------|------------|
|4-----------|------------|
|------------|------------|

Ok now during the chorus you've got these chords to play:

"...tomoooooorrows....foooorcing all goodbyyyyyyyeeeees...(or the first chorus which is "tomooooorrowwws, haaaaauuunted by yooour ghooooooooooost...")

You're gonna do a slide between these chords:

|------------|------------|
|------------|------------|
|9-----------|------------|
|9-----------|------------| slide to
|7-----------|------------|
|------------|------------|

6
6
4

then play

10
10 slide to
8

6
6 slide to
4

Bmin

then come BACK to D minor and start all over again with the verse structure.

I hope I didn't screw anything up. I don't have the greatest ear but I think you get the gist of it.

The leads are really easy as they're just one note bends. Find the note and bend it, just be careful because some are half note bends and some are full note bends. Again, make sure you're tuned to Eb because it's much easier that way than figuring this shit out on E standard like I did.

Private Hell sounds so much like another song from the 70's but I can't put my finger on it. It's the dual vocal chorus in the verse that reminds me of a song but I can't remember the song or the band.

"Maybe I'm afraid to let you all the way in" is one of the lines from Private Hell that sounds just like it.

It sounds like something I've heard from either Supertramp, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, or another band whose name eludes me right now. Argh, help me people!!!!!

It sounds almost like a Crosby Stills Nash and Young song. Which one, i cannot place. But that must be who you are thinking of.

I think it was Southern Cross...although Southern Cross is much more upbeat. But this is definitely the same timbre vocally.

Man, I dug Private Hell right off the bat, but once you let it sink its teeth into you it really takes you for a ride. It's frickin' amazing....I daresay it's better than Down in a Hole. Srsly.

THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAH YOU'RE THE SHIT!!!!!! It's CSN!!!!!
Something i noticed. A slight trend, some bands have been kind of emulating CSN's style with harmonies. Even Opeth did it. Even Type O Negative did it. Its weird. CSN had some AMAZING harmonies! Whats not to love.
Also i dont think Southern Cross sounds like Private Hell but hey, interpretation is fun.

Actually DW i was listening to Private Hell and i think i found the songs that one sounds like.

But this one is the main contender.
I couldnt remember the name of it, but its Carry On.

Carry on sounds more like it but still there's something missing that I can't put my finger on. I can almost hear the harmony in my head but it eludes me.

And to think you dislike your job... :p

Only certain parts of it. My job is really like two jobs combined into one. Hookups like this happen because of the on-air part. That stuff never bothers me, it's the other day to day web related stuff that pisses me off sometimes. That, and the low pay... but it's hard to bitch about that when I get hooked up like this all the time.

What it all boils down to is that I take the good with the bad, and that's why I haven't jumped ship yet. There's definitely much more good than bad, but when it's bad, it's really bad. I always get over it.
