New Anathema song

I would beg to differ. But don't want to engage in useless arguments with personal opinions as starting points(never leads anywhere).

No no, I'm curious. What metal bands would you consider extremely deep, honest, and thought-provoking?

For me, maybe Green Carnation and Novembre, but not really in the same way as Anathema. They may come close but still don't have that raw emotion that the Cavanagh brothers are famous for. I see what John's saying and I think I have to agree. Nothing has ever made me feel so helpless as Regret by Anathema or Black Gives Way to Blue by AIC or Weight of the World by Antimatter.

I could name a few but I'd rather not. It all depends on personal experiences. And I don't want to hear people bashing someone's preferences just because they think differently. I think it's pointless and 'retarded'. But it can and would happen.

Nah it won't happen. No one's going to give you shit for liking a band...maybe a little teasing but no one's gonna throw shit at you or anything.

Well in that case, how much of a captain obvious would I be if I were to state Nevermore as extremely deep, honest, and thought-provoking?
Then there's Candlemass, Funeral and Shape of Despair.
If we weren't talking about metal, I'd put Tool in there too.

Well there you go. All good bands...love me some SoD.

I think I like Nevermore so much because they do something with thrash besides rehash the same shit over and over again. I've been listening to thrash longer than some people on this forum have been alive, and trust me, there's only so much you can do with pure thrash metal, unless you actually LIKE hearing the same riff and drumming patterns over and over again for 20+ years. Nevermore broke that cycle and although there have been a few copycats, none hold any water next to Nevermore.

Unless we're talking about Nevermoe.

I've always thought Candlemass (Yeah, I said it. Flame me.) and Shape of Despair were overrated to shit, but I loooooooooooooooooove Funeral. Frode is the voice of doom metal.

Their last album wasn't so great, but "From These Wounds" is one of my favorite albums of all time.

first listen, i'm really enjoying the song. can't wait to hear the album. then i'll make my judgments on this new anathema stuff.

This isn't bad, but so far I'm not really being drawn into it. I'm guessing this album probably won't hit me the same way that Judgment, A Fine Day to Exit, and A Natural Disaster did. As for the discussion about their old stuff vs their less old stuff, I don't really like their old metal material. I admittedly haven't spent much time with it, but my initial impression was that it was kind of dull and lacking in depth or dimension. I think reinventing themselves as a post-rock band (or whatever you want to call what they've been doing since) was a good call.
