Thought it might interest people on this board as M50s seem quite popular here. I've got a pair of M50s myself.

I still think there must be something wrong with my m50's, because everytime somebody describes what they sound like it's like nothing they sound to me.
Anybody knows if there are fakes around? I got mine 3 or 4 years ago new from ebay usa and they look genuine.
Maybe I can send them to audio technica for a check

There definitely are. They can be either impossible to tell apart from the real thing by looking at them, or very difficult.

Sometimes they can show some signs:

If you got them on ebay for a really good price they are way more likely to be fake.

Hey everyone !

Sorry for the small digging but i've just ordered a brand new pair of Ath m50x's ! :D
I've never had a "real" set of monitoring headphones. My only headphones are sony xb300 and pioneer se305 :heh: so yeah... HUGE step forward !
Desperatly needed some headphones for recording and just for analysing small details in my mixes.
Hesitated between the m50's and beyer dynamic dt770 which are real comfortable !

I finally decided to go with the new m50x since i read the padding is supposed to be better and the removal cable feature is handy.

I'll keep you guys posted :)
but since i've never owned good headphones (even though i did try out the dt770 and a sennheiser hd25) i don't know if my review will be of any help...

Best thing about the new model coming out was that the old models were being blown out in music shops to make way for the new. 2 friends of mine picked up pairs for almost half off.

A bit OT but this seems like the appropriate thread to ask

have any of you guys had the synthetic leather on the ear pads crack/tear? My M50s have cracks on both ear pads, it may have to do with carelessness on my part, but I think it could also be a dry weather issue.. Is it necessary (or advisable) to apply some sort of moisturizing leather cream to them, once in a while? Has this happened to any of you?

I wonder if there are replacement pads for these headphones

*Ah, nevermind about the replacement pads, googled and found them haha:

Still curious to know if you apply some sort of preventive maintenance to the (leather) pads..

I have it on both mine as well, especially my first pair - its just a use issue, I wouldn't say where I live is ever particularly dry.
