New COF

A Line of Deathless Kings was a pretty solid album, but it just lacked that MDB feel to me. Aaron is starting to sound like he's whining instead of suffering.

To The Nameless Dead and The Gathering Wilderness are pagan metal classics. I wholeheartedly disagree.

What I don't see the big deal with these days is death metal. How many times can you play the same riff over and over again?

I see the big deal with solid well-written balanced death metal. I however, do not see the deal with melo"deth" or ultra technical wankery.. which usually are the things people love oh so very much.

So whats some decent death metal these days? I must admit I've been out of touch with the subgenre for a couple years. I like good riffs, not "OMG CHECK THIS FRETWORK SHIT MAN". Please gimme recos

Here's the coolest Death Metal from 2008:

New Bloodbath EP "Unblessing The Purity" is damn cool methinks. Fun and catchy with some great songwriting and brootul growls.
Infinitum - "Behold Eradication" is also very good. It's pretty technical but still riff-based for sure.
Arghoslent - "Hornets of The Pogram" is a riff monster also. More melodic than the other two.
Hail of Bullets - "Of Frost And War" is also cool. Very oldschool and catchy. Brilliant vocals.

I wrote this pretty weirdly but it's hopefully understandable

Bloodbath.

Get the "Nightmares Made Flesh" album for some groovy fuckin ruffs. Peter Tagtgren does the vocals on that album too, who I prefer to Akefeldt but meh, they're both good.

I have heard the new Bloodbath EP, and yeah I dig it quite a bit, way better than the NMF material. I shall now brag: I was at the Wacken '05 show (thats now on DVD. They ruled. And the new Arghoslent is fuckin ace. Since we see eye to eye on those two, I shall check the others.

Akerfeldt >>>>> Tagtgren

I dont think NMF, while still being a good album, is even nearly as good as the other BB releases.

+1. RTC is one of the catchiest death metal releases ever, definitely a good listen even if it isn't the most original thing ever (not supposed to be from what I understand). Not to mention the greatest guitar tone ever.

You'd probably dig Hail of Bullets. I don't know about Infinitum.. depends on how technical you can handle. They do base their sound on solid riffing though, no Necrophagisting going on at all.

Oh I don't mind technical music as long as its accompanied by decent riff/songwriting. I actually like Necrophagist because some of the riffs, especially from Epitaph are quite headbangable and catchy.

Good death metal from this year?

Execration (Nor) - Syndicate of Lethargy (not to be confused with a gay American Execration which also released and album this year)
Island - Orakel (this is a compilation of their earlier EP's)
