Great instrumental sections, but what the hell's going on with the backing vocals? Really detracted from my enjoyment of the song. I'll hold off on judgment until the whole thing is out.

I guess they were going for that bay area thrash backing vocal feel. From the EPK there is some footage of portnoy recording the backing vocals

Mike's never been known for his voice....I'll wait for the full cd to see how I feel. This song does remind me some of The Glass Prision. I Can't really make out the lyrics too much..wonder which song will be the last of the AA songs.

Back to ripping off? They never stopped. :(

The new song is awesome though, Portnoy really needs to stay away from doing back up vocals.

Dream Theater has never been shy about their influences. in fact if you watch the making of documentaries they usually list all the bands they are being inspired by, and the mood they are trying to reach. Even when charting their songs they list them as : Meshuggah Riff 1, Metallica Riff low, Rush riff, etc...

I might be in the minority here (but I like DT, so isn't that already a minority within this forum) but I think that Portnoy's vocals are good, especially live. Just look at Score, they add a lot to the sound.

The AA song in this album is Repentance and it is not the last one since it is about the 8th and 9 steps (it's a 12 step program). Repentance is a slow tempo song because when they do play all of them live together, this song will serve as the break from the first 3 heavy songs (Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Root of All Evil).

Hmmm.... Interesting. I'll have to give this another listen to let it sink in, as at 2:30 in the morning, it is just not doing it for me. Time to go to friggan bed!

why is it that when Dream Theater rip off everyone on the planet people just say " oh, well they wear thier influences on thier sleeve"?

If other bands attempted to be as lazy and do the same the fans would tear them to shreds.

For a group with so much talent they really need to go back to songwriting 101 and understand simply cutting and pasting other bands riffs into a 7 minute songs is not songwriting.

Just my two cents.

What are these AA songs you are guys are speaking? I have never heard of this before.

AA being Alcoholics Anonymous.

Mike P started with The Glass Prison, then This Dying Life then The Root of All Evil.

If Repentence is only steps 7 and 8, then we have two more albums of this GODAWFUL pretentious crap to sift through.

Meanwhile, has John M written anything since FII? He was the 2nd best lyricist in DT (after KevMo)

I Like the new song....then again...what the hell do I know, obviously DT sucks by most accounts here soooo.....
