New Journey album Revelation

The original Soul Sirkus release (Black Cover) has Deen Castonovo on drums and then they re-released it with (Green & Yellow Covers) with Virgil Donati. I saw them live with Virgil and he was amazing, did an unbelievable drum solo.

I bought the yellow version at last year's Progpower, blindly I may add. Needless to say, I sold it on Amazon a few weeks later. That disc was so weak, compared to the talent of that lineup, it wasn't funny! Major, major disappointment to me, but I may be in the minority about this one. *shrugs*

Ok, after seeing all the kudos being handed out here for Revelation, I decided to pick it up today. I gotta say it does sound like vintage Perry-era Journey--much more so than Generations a few years back. I was really disappointed with that one. I'm impressed enough with the new songs to even consider checking them out on tour...maybe.

Anyways, there will never be another Perry for Journey, but Arnel seems to be a good fit for their future.

Question for those who picked up the 3 disc version at Walmart ....

Is there supposed to be a booklet inside the first panel of the digipack? When I opened my copy it was empty, but looked like there should be a booklet ... hmmmm ...

c.

PS: the album sounds pretty damn awesome to my ears :)

Nope, Soul Sirkus has Virgil Donati on drums

There was another version of the album with Dean Castronovo on it. I thought it was the one that was released in the US, but it could have been the Japanese version.

But, Journey really should have called it a day. Their heyday a long, long time ago. They are not getting it back anytime soon.

Nah. Journey's career ended too soon in 1986. The fact that there are a million imitators on Frontiers Records alone tells you that there is still a market for the sound they pioneered.

But then again, the Journey albums since Arrival aren't really any better than say, Hugo albums or House of Shakira albums. If Journey can't play Journey-style music better than their imitators, maybe they should call it a day. Still, I have enjoyed all of the Journey albums since Perry left atlhough I don't consider them classics. If it's decent I'll listen to it.

Given that you think even Perry can't even do the classics justice anymore, who do you know can?

Possibly no one singing that exact same style. Steve Perry's natural style from 1978-1986 was just insane. But his voice dropped an octave or two as he got older(you could begin to hear a difference as early as the Frontiers album).

As far as hitting the notes, it can be done by a lot of singers, but trying to imitate Steve Perry when that's not your natural sound is bad for your voice. I think that's what did in Steve Augeri. If you listen to Tall Stories album, he sounds a certain way, then on Arrival he's suddenly Steve Perry. They should just get someone with enough range to hit the notes, but who doesn't necessarily need to sound just like Steve Perry.

That disc was so weak, compared to the talent of that lineup, it wasn't funny! Major, major disappointment to me, but I may be in the minority about this one

It wasn't weak, it was just not something that will appeal to all fans of the members' other material.

After watching the LIVE dvd again, i realize that Arnell at times sounds dead on like Tony Harnell of TNT. I noticed this when i wasn't looking at the screen but just listening, try it.

All this chatter made me more curious about the new CD so I had to go out and get it last night at Walmart. The CD I think is much better then the last 2 atleast on a whole and the songs are very catchy like classic Journey. If other bands want to increase album sales....take a look at Journey. 11 Song CD with new material, 11 song CD with older songs remade, and a DVD with a full concert covering hits and new songs for less then $12.00. Not a bad package for a decent price. I give it a thumbs up.....it doesn't disapoint. Standard catchy rock songs with several slower love songs.

Actually , this new album is truly great! I have the Steve augeri releases as well, and the songs are great on those releases. If your a Perry disciple then don't buy the disc. If you love great music, buy it. Jeff Scott Soto? He was better with Yngwie. A great value at Wal-Mart, cost me only $11.88.

When I initially read your post I was like, WTH! Then I got to thinking about it and that actually would be cool. I don't think Schon has balls that big though, but I could be wrong.

~Brian~
Floor has balls that big.

Everyone said Journey sold out when they went away from their jazz-blues sound (Kohoutek) to the stadium rock era...then sold out again when Perry quit and they got a new lead singer...and they sold out every time they had a roster change.

Now they have a kickass lead singer, and they are selling out again...in stadiums all over America.

I have listened to the album, loved it, but will not buy it because Journey sold out by marketing it as a Wal-Mart exclusive.

And the reason why they could get this album out so fast is because they were writing songs the entire time JSS was with the band...but they were waiting for someone with talent before they made the album.

Got this for Fathers day. I have not listened to the new stuff yet but the dvd is good. The dude can sing. The drummer can sing as well. It will never be the same without Perry but this about as close as it can get.

After reading a few more posts, all I can say is that some of you appear to be thinking a little too hard about all this. If you like Journey, the Journey sound, Neal Schon's guitar playing, etc. then buy the disc. Yes, it's made to make money. They went with Wal mart to reach the widest audience possible(something ANY artist want to try and do). Your buying a compact disc, not a philosophy. And the new guy sounds like Perry because that is what the majority of the fan base wants. Why take a risk with that when trying to preserve a 30 year career? I don't mean to sound like a jerk, just adding my op. The disc is great.

Hey man, there's no jerkiness in you here, you're just tellin' it like it is. And Journey rocks, period! Sure, it's damn hard with out Perry; and Schon is easily one of the most underated guitar players in rock, so folks just chill out and enjoy it for what it is...:headbang:

Just picked up the new Journey, popped it in the player, listened to the first track Never Walk Away and thought "Hmmm.....this sounds familiar". Then I popped in Jeff Scott Soto's Lost in the Translation cd and listened to the first track Believe In Me (co-written with Neal Schon). Is it just me, or are they eerily similar? Boy, what a kick in the sack for Soto!

My 2 cents on the Soto/new guy thing. 98% of the Journey fan base has no idea who Jeff Scott Soto is and about the same has no interest whatsoever in new Journey material. What they want is to go out on a summer evening and relive the past. As much as we, and possibly even the band, would like to freshen up the sound and do something relevent for today it would probably not sit well with the casual (majority) of their fans. Soto in Journey is on par with Corabi in Motley Crue. Probably better but just not the same.

As for the new guy ( I'm too lazy to look up his name) not being as good as Perry, maybe he can't quite hit the notes the way Perry did in 1986 but could who knows if Perry can still hit those notes?

In conclusion, I think the new album is safe but solid. It's sounds kind of phoned in but could easily have come out in 1989 and been a hit. I'm sure no one will read this as I always wait to post until 3 weeks after a thread is relevent, much like any new Journey album. :)

Never Walk Away also sounds like Be Good to Yourself. Same chord progression I think. To Be Alive Again and It's Never Too Late on the two previous albums are also very similar.
