With Music For Nations folding it's possible that Opeth will be looking for a new record label. I'd think they'd be a pretty hot commodity. Any idea which way they might go in looking for a label?

I'd love to see them join Porcupine Tree on Lava.

Andy Karp? Whattya think?

NO WAY, it would mean more "sophistication" from SW...lol, lets just hope they get a label where they can just have them brewing their own ideas and leave the "sophistication" to the wankers.

I think both Lava and Unique Leader would be a major step back... Koch really has done a phenomenal job of distribution and promotion. They'd definitely find themselves to be a big priority if they signed with Nuclear Blast.

In my opinion, Nuclear Blast probably wont do as good a job promoting and all that jazz as Music-For-Nations. I think they should stay with Koch, and Koch should move into Europe and take all the bands being affected.

All of MFN's bands get transferred to BMG.
True, but I think with MFN shuttering its doors, so to speak, Opeth's last two albums (that counted as one) may now count as two, thus ending their contractual agreement with MFN/BMG. I think that's how it may work, allowing Opeth to free agent and start a major bidding war. Again, this is an assumption.

Like Mikael implies, I do not think they're music is as predictable as major labels would prefer it to be, but then again, they have an audience, a fan basis, and 7 albums behing them.
It would be interesting to see what they did if they got onto a major label, but I do not know if a major label would except them. I really do not know all the criteria for getting signed to a major label, but I am very confident in the fact that Opeth has the ability to. I'm cool with it as long as they still make music and are cool with their label.

The "criteria" for getting signed to a major is simple. If they can make money for the label without spending a lot they'll get signed. If they start losing money they're gone. I think a stint at a major would be good for them if for no other reason than some increased exposure. Drop a record, gain some fans that may not have heard Opeth on an indie and then go back to a "safe" indie home.
