new My Dying Bride album sample

But take a band like enslaved who, on paper, will do a similar sort of thing. Clean, heavy, clean vox, harsh vox, big epic songs etc. But actually there would be no mistaking either band when listening to them.

Ironically, Opeth and Enslaved are going to be touring together soon (if they're not already)... gonna catch 'em myself in NJ on May 1st. Should be interesting.

Well, every band is compared to someone.
Right or wrong, it always happens.
If someone says to you, "Have you ever heard BAND X"?
If you haven't, you might be inclined to say, "No, who would you compare them to?" It's only natural.

Almost EVERY band has been inappropriately compared to another band at one point in time. This is even more prevalent as you break down metal into its handful of subgenres.

So, if I was going to detail the ND sound to someone who is only familiar with larger name bands, I might have to compare them to an "Opeth" just so I can put their mind in the right ballpark.

Hey, if that means that the thousands of Opeth fans world wide would be more open to checking out ND, then that's a good thing right? I think once they do discover ND and explore their catalog, the differences will be obvious.

So, I suppose the purpose of this lengthy detail (From Jasonic, no way!!!!) is that while it might seem annoying, it isn't exactly bad in the long run.

I have no issue at all with people using other bands to compare ND to, when needing to put us in some sort of genre. It's fair to say we're more in the same genre with Opeth then we are with say Fintroll. The issue comes in when people assume and insist we've either been heavily influenced by, or have stolen from a band and are trying to be a clone of that band. Fuck that. Some people are clueless. Just because we have not been graced with the success and popularity as some other bands, we've been around as long if not longer, doing the same thing since day one with acoustic passages, clean vs death vocals, female vocals, heavy to mellow parts... Listen to Amid! It's ALL there, and yet to this day, we're STILL told we're trying to sound just like Opeth, or My Dying Bride... It's frustrating. Our Opeth sounding influence is 100% PINK FLOYD. Our My Dying Bride sounding influence is part CELTIC FROST, part TROUBLE, part CANDLEMASS... You guys get the point. Many of us don't even really listen to the newer metal bands we're compared to.

Take Chris... He has heard MDB only once... They day we played with them in Belgium. He's heard Opeth ONCE, and the CD was My Arms Your Hearse...

I will say this... The new CD should be interesting. We've always tried to be a thick filter of our own material, disregarding riffs or parts of songs that we feel might sound too much like another band... This time, we said "fuck it" and wrote what we wanted to write, and really turned that filter WAY down. It should be interesting to see what you guys think, because at the end of the day, we just care about the fans, and not the journalists who do the comparing anyway.

Wow... Oops... I really didn't mean for that to be a rant.

so, the new My Dying Bride stuff sure sounds good.

 I love MDB too Will, but this is the ND forum, so you knew this topic was bound to come up, regarding the comparisons.

Paul - Your post was not a rant. It was dead on.
I guess as a fanboy, I look at it from the standpoint of, if it brings someone new in the door, then cool! If someone is going to discount the works of ND because of a band that you are being accused of copying, then so be it. Chances are they aren't going to get you guys anyhow.

As you said, you guys were around before many bands you are accused of copying from. Chances are, you will be around a lot longer.

I am sure a band like OPETH has to already be getting bored with the band. I mean, the challenge isn't really there. They will play the same venues every tour, etc, etc. Nothing against them, but from a commercial success standpoint, they have probably peaked. That's where success can sometimes be restricting at the same time for a band with a niche sound.

Will - I WILL (pun intended!) get back on topic once I get around to checking out the samples. The new MDB will be a no brainer purchase for me regardless. Their last one was amazing.

Considering how every thread we have on this forum gets quickly derailed by everyone, even the ones where it's discussing important new ND developments or whatever, the least of my concerns is that a fucking thread about new MDB is getting derailed.

Yeah, but this one is getting derailed in a direction to be on-topic for the forum, so in this instance, it's constructive, no?

That's at least what I was going for in my posts.

I haven't heard MDB in 14 years. I was never influenced by them at all. To me, Forest of Equilibrium, Realm of Chaos and Lost Paradise were much more powerful. Sure the pretty stuff is cool at times, but I was more into the power and impact of Metal songs. Heard the MDB sample today. Not into it. Now Hail Of Bullets on the other hand. That's the shit. Best Death Metal I've heard in years. I dig Warpath too.

Was that supporting DIO?
I know that tour hit Jackhammer's in Schaumburg, IL.
Though I think MDB didn't finish the whole tour.
Does anyone know if MDB played this show?

Nope. MDB headlined!!!

The horrible band named Bile opened. I got my head sliced open by some douchebag who was crowdsurfing during Bile. His spiked wristband cut me wide open. I was covered in blood, and then this fucking cocksucker came bac kand this time KICKED ME IN THE FUCKING head with his boot.

By this time, I was ready to pass out because Coney Island high was 100 degrees. And then of course I did collapse twice.

As soon as Martin started tuning the violin, I went into the bathroom, cleaned up and made it front in center. They were my favorite band at the time. It would take more than a sliced-open forehead to prevent me from seeing MDB.

Let me look online for the setlist...

I have that show on Video. MDB did the entire Dio tour, and while they were here, they set up a headlining tour for them with all local support. They played only a few shows of that tour, and left due to Rick the drummer at the time having "Health" issues. He then quit the band when they got home. We were scheduled to play with them at Jack Hammers on the headline tour, and I got a call from Andy the DAY we were supposed to play with them, saying they were in the airport going home.

Yes. I was at that show, and also went to see them in Wisconsin at the Rave. The Jackhammers show is notorious as one of their WORST shows ever in terms of technical failure as the Violin simply would not work, so Martin had to improvise everything on Keys, and they were also plagued with other tech issues. They were amazing in Wisconsin, and played longer.

Speaking of Andy, he JUST emailed me. I'll let you know how the new CD is in a few days. :)
