Being a huge Opeth fan, I had to download the album before it came out. So as soon as I heard it had been leaked I was all over it. Granted I still plan on buying the album for the better sound quality and artwork. But let me tell you album is fucking tearing shit apart. It is fucking real good, granted its no Still Life (my personal fav), but it is better than Deliverance.

Peace

I've never been a big Opeth fan, but I like this album a lot. The first track sounds a hell of a lot like Tool, but that doesn't bother me especially. Glad there's a lot of use of clean vocals on this album, that's what is setting it apart from the others for me.

I head that now that Opeth is now signed to Road Runner, that this next album will be good, but that they were goign to get worse and worse. Anyone else hear that? I mean, I am a huge opeth and all, but I have a feeling that they are goign to turn into one of those bands that those "hot topic" folk are going to get into.

Any Thoughts?

Yeah, that's a true fan right there. I love music, working on my own solo album, and have some bands I love as well. But I don't see why people feel the need to download an album listening to it all weeks to months before it's out.

I agree with you!! Roadrunner has been a shit label since they lost all the good thrash/death metal bands from the 80's/early 90's. To think roadrunner used to be the home of Death, Suffocation, King Diamond, Annihilater, Heathen, Deicide, Cynic, pestilence, Gorguts, ect...ect... Now look at roarunner they have turned into a hot topic/mallcore label with bands like Cradle of Filth, Chimaira, slipknot, devildriver, ect..ect... Btw Opeth shirts have already been distributed in Hot Topic since "blackwater park" came out but now they are going to only get worse (prediction). I'm surprised the latest nightwish "once" & new Obituary was good but I feel (like Opeth in the future) that those bands will become mallcore/hot topic material. (God forbid though) . Sorry but roadrunner can start signing actual metal bands all they want but they are NOT gonna win me over! The only thing RR wants to do with bands is make sure they become the next hot topic band !!!

As you said, the new CD isn't on par with "Still Life", but it may be their best since "Still Life". It does kind of fade towards the end. The last two tracks are somewhat weak. Might they grow on me? Perhaps.

I love Opeth, they are the only band getting me through the personal crap I am dealing with right now!

I can't wait for this album to come out, damn I should get it on pre-order as we speak....

PS, Let's all pray that Roadrunner doesn't ruin Opeth! What was that twist on the old saying of "Don't trust people over 30" oh yeah, it's now "Don't trust people under 30" - unfortunately these are the people running labels now?

Wow, very interesting, I disagree. I think the album starts and ends very strongly and actually fades in the middle. "The Grand Conjuration" has really, really grown on me, and is one of my favorite tracks on the album now. I also feel that the haunting and searing vocal performance by Akerfeldt on the final track "Isolation Years" makes it one of their strongest ballads.

To me, songs 4, 5 are where the album really loses steam. The tracks just kind of meander, with some interesting parts, but haven't really caught my attention enough to want to focus on them. The first 3 tracks are outstanding, "Ghost of Perdition" has grown on me the way "The Grand Conjuration" has, and "The Baying of the Hounds" is simply one of their greatest songs ever.

Perhaps my lack of interest in the middle songs has something to do with the fact that I was expecting and hoping for something much heavier and edgier after Damnation. Time will tell I suppose.

For now, I would say the album as a whole is about on par with Still Life, but then again Morningrise is easily my favorite by them by a wide margin, so the comparison for me is on a bit of a different level.

Thanx for the support. I know roadrunner can be a bitch of a label, but as long as the bands are coming out with good sounding albums, i will continue to buy them. I would not not buy an album because of the label the band is on. That is stupid. As long as the music is good, then I am happy.

Stay metal!

I personally believethat Opeth has too much integrity as musicians to make the album that roadrunner will want them to make. Yes, it is possible that Opeth will turn into one of those Hot Topic bands, but there is nothing we can really do about that, other than beat the shit out of the hot topic kids when they come to the concert. LOL!!

The reason that I download music early is because I have no patience.
