Well I recorded my Recto cab today (please check out that thread and comment!), and I figured while the mic was setup, I might as well make some impulses too! I'm really happy with 'em, and I think you guys will like 'em too! Just two impulses (different presence settings, same mic position, but I tweaked it a lot!), so you won't have to worry about decisions decisions! :D

Here's a direct link. Enjoy! :)

i will post a comparison between this and ryans AWESOMETIME.wav impulse in a minute..

Uggggghhh, not that song and dance again  I guess I might, but not like I expect it to sound too great! :erk:

Ok, sure, will do! After all, it was this forum's fine folks that bought it for me, so I owe you guys! :D

Haven't listened or tried anything of the things you've posted recently but it's about fuckin' time man! Congratulations on the cab :)

Thanks dude! And seeing as how I've listened to and commented on everything you've posted, maybe it's about time you returned the favor! ;) (and the slight edge of hostility there isn't so much directed towards you, but rather at some others to whom the same can be said!)

Tried to make this pretty scientific.
Exact same revalver and TSS settings for each clip, just changed the impulse and boogex and THAT'S IT.
So I'm sure I could dial in more appropriate settings for Marcus' impulse. Infact, i'ma play with it now and post my results in this as an edit in a minute..

Thanks Gareth! Sounds like Ryan was far more cautious of the dustcap than I was; oh well, the mic position worked well for my recording anyway! (and the extra fizz might cut better in a mix). Also, his cab is a lot older than mine, so the speakers are probably much more nicely broken in.

Yeah, a bit fizzier but I'm sure this would cut through nicely in a mix.
Next time I do a full mix with impulses I'll do another comparison then Marcus :D

i am not an expert on impulses, but i have a question after reading some threads about Jens Bogren work. Did anybody try to make an impulse from several mics? B/c so far all impulses were a single mic, but if you combine SM57 and some condenser and find a response function of this combination, it might get us closer to ... next level. I would do those experiments if I have all hardware.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to do actually - one would set up both mics, record-enable each track, and then record the sine-sweep through both simultaneously; then, one would bounce those two tracks to one mono track to combine the signals (the positions of the faders would determine ratio), and then deconvolve using that bounced file. I'd experiment with it...if I owned more than one mic  (awhile ago I did it with a 57 + i5, but it was from a crappy batch of impulses that I made with the Resonance control on my JSX way too low, so they were super-thin - at least it worked though!)

what about nebula experiments? I kind of lost where all that went, b/c dynamic impulses is more accurate thing to go.

My signature has my Nebula thread, which is probably the single largest resource on the intarwebs about using Nebula for cab modeling.

I still maintain that it's a great sound. I don't think it sounds better than traditional impulses because it's actively modeling speaker thump or anything, but for some reason, when impulses and Nebula programs made from the same equipment, position and conditions, one right after the other, the Nebula stuff just seems to come through with a little more life and response.

You can hear it in blind tests. My mic/Nebula/impulse comparisons show that the sounds are very close, but each have identifying characteristics that really make it the mixer's preference at this point.

The ONLY problem that I have with Nebula at the moment is the latency. The newer Core II Nebula came out, and I upgraded to that, and it feels faster, but I still don't think it's fast enough.
