New Recto cab impulse time baby!!!!

My signature has my Nebula thread, which is probably the single largest resource on the intarwebs about using Nebula for cab modeling.

I still maintain that it's a great sound. I don't think it sounds better than traditional impulses because it's actively modeling speaker thump or anything, but for some reason, when impulses and Nebula programs made from the same equipment, position and conditions, one right after the other, the Nebula stuff just seems to come through with a little more life and response.

You can hear it in blind tests. My mic/Nebula/impulse comparisons show that the sounds are very close, but each have identifying characteristics that really make it the mixer's preference at this point.

The ONLY problem that I have with Nebula at the moment is the latency. The newer Core II Nebula came out, and I upgraded to that, and it feels faster, but I still don't think it's fast enough.

Has there been any mention on why they sound so different to the actual cab/impulse? We've been waiting for months now on some word and/or progress in that regard.

Props to you for keeping it all going though.

Ok, so I did some comparisons using the Nile Cover DI's.

4 tracks panned L/R 100%/82%, Guitar Suite Tube Screamer into SoloC 1.12 into Boogex. Same settings used on all 4 clips which were as follows:-

TS - Drive 3 Tone 4 Level 10
SoloC - Input 10 OD Channel, OD Boost engaged, Contour 5 Bass 6 Mids 2 Treble 4 Gain 6 Bright Engaged, Master 5

I just picked those settings as they're the Sneap 5150 settings, so these settings were NOT tuned to a specific Impulse (just in case someone tries to pull that "oh, he tweaked the settings for a particular Impulse!").

I prefer Ryans Impulse more on this test, seems to have more low end girth to it when compared to your new Impulse Marcus, and feels a little more scooped (which I guess just more suits the DI material). Your old Impulse seems to have more of the girth, but is also very dull and muddy sounding, I think Ryans Impulse is a nice middle ground between the two to my ears. I'm not sure about the first blend, it seems like it has too much high end, I need to do more listening to give a true comment. The second blend on the other hand seems pretty nice as Ryans Impulse is giving the highs and the nice cut, and the Stiletto Impulse is filling in more of the midrange.

Nice Impulses all the same though Marcus, I'm sure they'll come in useful somewhere along the line, thanks again.

And thanks for the comparisons; I can't listen now, but I'm not surprised Ryan's work better - one big thing that comes to mind is since the 5150 has a Resonance control (as did my JSX), one can add in more power amp fullness/"girth," whereas the Recto just has a presence knob (and the copious low-end comes from the preamp)

Oh yeah shit dude. I forgot about them. I may do another post later.

Hey dude, I only listened to the first two Nile clips (all Awesometime and all ORG), and while I feel mine perhaps is a bit too fizzy, I also feel you were too far from the dustcap with the 57 for my tastes, Ryan, when you made Awesometime.

So Stee, since you have the DI's and seem to have a decent ampsim dialed in, would you mind uploading the same test with Ryan's awesome4 pulse? (it's my favorite of the 5 he's made so far).

Has some nicer sparkle in the high end, but also has the low end that your Impulses are missing. Maybe the Recto isn't good for taking Impulses from, simply because of the lack of control over the poweramp as you stated previously.

You know, quite honestly I really don't hear that much more Girth in Ryan's impulses, but rather I feel mine was made with the mic just a bit too close to the dustcap, so it has more fizz; awesomeimpulse4 still isn't quite doing it for me, it has something about it I don't like; oh well, time to take matters into my own hands by making more of my own, I suppose! :D Stay tuned!

Just ran both clips through CurveEQ and while it's not huge, there is more going on in the lower end on Ryans AwesomePulse4 Impulse than your ORG Impulse. Maybe more around 100hz, and a little more at about 60hz too.

Yours is on the left, and Ryans on the right. If you look at around 64hz yours is hitting about -12 and Ryans about -7, and at about 100hz, yours hits -2 and Ryans is about +2. I'm not trying to get into any fight or anything here with you, just trying to prove that when I was hearing more girth in Ryans Impulse, it wasn't just my ears!.
