I just placed an order for...

an SM7B.

Long story short, when I added together the money I got over the holidays, and my mother decided the remainder would be an 'early birthday present', I wound up with the $350 I needed for one of these fuckers.

So liek now I'll sound like teh pimp on CS:S and the ladi-THWACK!

Hmm, that doesn't happen too often anymore. Anyway, I'm going to be building another few preamps to test with this, and borrowing a camera to document this nonsense (so it'll actually be viewable), so over the next few days I might be posting some weird shit here and there. I'm going to try the '$5 giant-killing preamp' at some point, when I have one around again (Long fucking story... to make it short, I shouldn't be allowed to be up for a week straight and decide 'I'll loan this pair out, I can always build more' until I make sure I can still get reasonable prices on the parts necessary to actually build more... now those chips cost $5 themselves and there aren't any more free samples. Balls.) but I'm going to be trying a few more simple solid-state devices in the meantime.

Jeff: I have heard these are great for miking a 4x12 cab.
Can you comment on this for us?
Thanks

Nice catch, I sure hope you have a pre with enough gain for this puppy, I heard they need a lot of it.

They do need alot of gain. You pretty much have to max out the level on a firepod pre using a sm7, but running it through my adl 600 makes it sound great.

I do play CS:S, because I like blowing shit up and the twats arguing over who's gayer make me feel much better about myself. I've been playing quite a bit because school's out until next week, so I'll be found there a bit more often than usual for the next few days. And, yes, I do go by Hammy, Hampster of Doom online... because I can.

I'll mic up my 2x12 when it comes in - hell, I'll be trying it on everything just to see what it does well. Don't have a 4x12 but I'm pretty happy with my amp so I haven't found a need to get one... although I may be upgrading speakers soon.

I'll be building preamps with a good 60-70dB of gain, and I have a few very clean boosts that would give a decent head start. My lovely little transistors just came in today, in fact... since I had heard just about everywhere that they needed a good amount of gain I started looking up good mic preamps early so I'll be building about a half-dozen or so by week's end if all goes as planned.

I didn't like it on my cab, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work. I heard thats the only mic they used for guitars on the new rush album, but I haven't heard it so I can't comment.

Good stuff lads, however you want to get yourselves playing Call of Duty 4 online!

As not to totally go off subject, congrats on the SM7! Im sure you will be singing into that all the time before you go back to school next week :Smokin::)

Never heard of it, sorry. I just had to pick the most intimidating creature in existence, and so I chose the hamster. Never know what those little buggers are plotting, never do...
