newby question for Andy

Hi Andy,

I was really impressed when I heard the guitar sound on "dead heart in a dead world". What setup did you use? When going for a ballcrunching sound do you find that a dead room is a better option for an amp/cab setup?
In particular, what preamp was the mic (57 im guessing) going through?

"Custom Built 7 String Guitar loaded with EMG 707 pickups. The guitars were routed into a Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer that was used as a signal boost. The settings on the TS-9 were:

Drive: 9 O'Clock
Tone: 10 O'Clock
Level: 12 O'Clock

This was fed into the amp that was used on all of the rhythm and leads. The amp used was a Mesa Boogie (2 Channel) Dual Rectifier that was straight from the box. The Mesa Recto was routed into a Marshall 1960B 4X12 Cab with the stock 75 Celestions they have. Settings on the Mesa Recto were:

Silicon Diode Setting
Bold Setting
Red (Modern) Channel
Treble: 11.30
Mids: 10 O'Clock
Bass: 11.30
Gain: 12:30
Presence: 12.30
Master: 10 O'Clock

There were 4 tracks of rhythm, with 2 tracks being panned 100% left and right, and the other set being panned 80% left and right. There was no compression, limiting, etc...only a slight touch of EQ used. Two Shure SM-57's were used for recording, one on the center of the cone about an inch away. This was the approximate's denoted by Andy Sneap previously."

I think it means one on the center of the cone and one about an inch away from the cone? I'm not sure.

Bah I've always read on this forum that he used a 3 channel out of the box and just 1 mic on dead heart.

A lot of people consider 'em fizzy speakers, and so me too.
I changed them for Vintage 30's

yeah, i need some v30's, fucking gt's are doing my head in.

He used 1960lead cab because the vintage cab in the studio was very old and the owner said that with "that massive ammount of volume" they could damage it.
Andy said that g12t5's are a little bit phasey and fizzy

I just think its funny how so many people strive for THIS tone then when they find out why they used 75s in stead of 30s they ask why .... lol

Dude you heard the tone, you love the tone, so STFU and love it no matter how he got it.

Its like my buddy who raved about the tone on a tune a did a few months ago and he begged me for the settings on my amp. I told him a used a Pod XT "with a certain persons presets of course" and he complained he didnt like it anymore .... what a moron ... lol

You guys, like everything else in recording THERE ARE NO RULES. I've heard Andy say it too, if a gt 75 sounds good use it! If everyone used the "perfect" setup every time recording music would be boring.
