Hi guys, I am not a 'rocker by trade'. :) I have however always had a respect for the scene as an outsider myself gravitating to the outcast groups of society. Not really true today as metal is absorbed into the mainstream so fully now but was in the 90s from what I remember growing up.

For my sins, historically, I was a raver through my school days and through that early imprinting on and off most of my life.

That is just a little primer to say I am not really versed in the ins and outs of whos who in the scene but have dipped my toes here and there.

Lately I have started singing to myself and enjoying it and Metallica's Unforgiven 2 came within my purview again when it was a background track for the late Dan Osman and his dare devil acts.

As such I am asking here for similar tunes in terms of melody, but more unknown/less commercial, from those 'in the know'.

I name Metallica only because they are so big and I knew them, not because I rate them particularly, but I prefer to know about very underground/niche stuff in preference to those big names. For example bands like Dream Theater (maybe big in the metal world but not in the mainstream I guess), and Budgie.

Oh yea and extra points for 80s and 90s since those were my formative years and I reminisce fondly on those lost halcyon days but not ruling out contemporary stuff but generally I think everything was better back then. :)

I noted none corny/camp as the first result I found listing melodic heavy metal the first two tracks I tried I was not impressed and I would classify as fitting those descriptors.

For reference, those were:

Therion - Birth of Venus Illegitima

and

Nemo - Nightwish
