What defines Black Metal, really? I have heard a lot of people bash Dimmu to bits, calling them sellouts and saying that "Dimmu suxx0r musixxx cuz it has keyboard fux", but I have never heard an explanation of why! So tell me, why does everyone hate DB and COF so much?

For clarity, he is not referring to Daudi Baldrs, the fifth album, which is a Casio nightmare. Avoid it like the plague. The first two Burzum releases are Burzum and Aske, which are now sold as one.

I think it's the fact that they don't sound like Darkthrone. The only big differences I see in Stormblast and Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is
A. The songs don't sound like they were recorded on a 4-track.
B. All of the lyrics aren't in Norwegian.

As for Cradle of Filth, people claim they're sell-outs because the music sucks now, and for the most part it does. Even if they made another album as good as Vempire, people would still say they suck.. simply because they're on a big label.

God damn, I wish my band could sell 100 albums and sound like the album was recorded in a cave somewhere. I'd be true as FUCK, then!

Thanks for the input guys. Whole lotta bands to look at. I decided I'm gonna start with Bathory and Immortal. I picked up Blizzard Beasts this weekend, and although it is a departure from what I usually listen to, I am enjoying it. A few more listens and I'll see what I really thnk.
