I don't think it's a "trend" and I don't think it will ever go away. Like adding keyboards. Some bands do that and some don't. Maybe it comes and goes but it's never going to just disappear. And in the case of a band like Scar Symmetry, how can anything take the place of their epic melodies? Maybe in other bands I could agree...

Like I said it's an acquired taste. I dig it.

Im with Schenk but I'll never get use to it cause I cant listen to it for more than a minute. Theres just not many highly skilled vocalists interested in metal anymore, so this is the substitute and I have no doubt that its not going to go away.

I wouldn't say growling is a substitute for skilled vocalists, as they still have to hit pitches and it requires skill to be able to do what they do. It's just a different style.

This is correct.

I'm tired of people ignorantly saying "oh it's just shouting/screaming", it's not. It's a very technical and difficult thing to perform, even more difficult to develop you're own style of it.

If you want "just shouting and screaming" then listen to some screamo or hardcore, thats vocal bollocks.

There's barely any recognizable pitch to a growl. Allen on PL is as close to a growl WITH pitch as you'll get.
I do agree that growling is skillful in its own way, and I do appreciate a quality growl. Akerfeldt is my favourite growler... so demonic.

I never noticed much change of pitch myself. Im sure its a developed skill... I got better at it as my family got older... but I didnt enjoy it..... lol. Seriously, it does seem to be a bit cliche and predictable anytime I check out other bands, stuff guys put up by their bands on UM, ect. Doesnt seem very expressive or rhythmic either. I suppose it makes me appreaciate a great vocalist better when I find one but they have always been rare, which brings me back to my first statement about this being a substitute, theres an intense amount of metal bands. Finding those special vocalists is very hard.

Growl with pitch...that's silly...there's no melody with growling...don't kid yourselves. Yes, it's a skill...so is juggling...there's nothing musical about it besides the rhythm.

It's a trick...it's not "very technical"...some people can do it without damaging their vocal chords, and some find it uncomfortable or just can't do it. It's a knack.

Give me one example of growling with pitch. There's no fluctuation...it's less of a musical technique than rapping.

Of course all sound has pitch as well as timbre and loudness...it wasn't a technical discussion...I'm pointing out that growlers don't vary pitch to follow a melody...it's strictly rhythmic...and for effect.

It's a knack.

I agree that Akerfeldt's growls are good for what they are...but I find Opeth dreadfully boring and repetitious.
