Now Reading...

Finished Dance. Was annoyed at a few cliffhangers, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Now reading Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji and Hounded by Kevin Hearne.

Just finished: Terminal World, by Alastair Reynolds. Not one of his better efforts.

Now reading: Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson. I'm only about 20 pages in, but I'm really enjoying the set-up so far!

Up next: Storm Front, by Jim Butcher. It's about time I checked out the Dresden Files.

Just started "Storm Front" also, and I am watching the series "Dreseden Files" on Netflix

That was a fun series that was never really given a chance to develop. The pilot episode was based on Storm Front, and was the best episode of the series, in terms of special effects at least.

I thought it finally hit its stride in the last few episodes and was disappointed when it was canceled.

re: the NPR list: I picked ten, submitted it, and then realized that I forgot to vote for Hitchhiker's Guide. :( Very weird that Harry Potter isn't on there... His Dark Materials isn't on there, either. Odd.

This will get shelved (or the kindle equivalent) if my ARC of the new Sandman Slim book shows up in the mail today.

I suspect that they figured Harry Potter would dominate the lists on sheer popularity. I also don't see any horror in that list - not even Dark Tower. I think it's an excellent guide to the best of the genre, though - there isn't a single book on that list that I've read that doesn't belong there, or made me go "why?" I was really surprised - but pleased - to see Beggars in Spain and When Gravity Fails on there; I would have expected them to be too obscure for a Best Of list like that.

If The Stand doesn't count as horror, World War Z ought to.

Often, fantasy and science fiction cross with horror. Personally, I think The Stand has some of all three. The basic concept is most certainly science fiction, which involves a good deal of horror and there are some fantasical elements as well.

I can think of better Discworld novels by Pratchett that should have been on that list. I enjoyed all of them, but those two, while not the worst, aren't what I would consider the best, either. I think Reaper Man is probably the best one. I was pleased to see American Gods and Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, though. And Watership Down. I really enjoyed that novel in high school, though I remember being shocked that it was considered a kids book. The characters may have been bunnies, but there was nothing terribly kid-friendly about them. Still loved the book, though!

I had to go out and check the list out on my phone.

While I can see an argument for Going Postal not being on the list (considering that I haven't read it.), I do think Small Gods does belong on the list. It is the one Pratchett book my wife really pushed me to read.

The one that really stands out on the list for me is Heinlein's "The Cat Who Walked Through Walls". Really? I thought it was half a good book before it went off the deep end. If they were going to go with a late-era Heinlein, I would have rather have seen Friday on the list.

It was also nice to see Piers Anthony's Incarnations Of Immortality on the list. For me, that was the highpoint of his writing career.

Finished Hounded! I found the protagonist a biiiit overpowered, but I liked it. Fans of urban fantasy should definitely check this out - it's like American Gods meets Dresden Files. With druids. :)

Amazon is pushing that series hard based on my previous purchases. I guess I'll have to give the first one a go. Right now I'm enjoying
