I was basing my Mothwind assessment on this:

Based on that I'd say there are some pretty obvious similarities in terms of vocals/lyrics/riffing style etc, so I'd guess Mastodon was an influence (which is no crime IMO). Mastodon would probably get less flack if they weren't so well known and hyped.

I count three mentions of Mastodon in 10 Mothwind review quotes from their press relese section:

https://www.reverbnation.com/mothwind/press

"Mothwind hits that sweet spot of arty, occasionally proggy, metal-influenced rock. Comparisons to bands like Mastodon are probably inevitable. But they’ve got the goods to stand on their own."

"very exciting debut of sci-fi themed metal that has a strong Mastodon/Tool vibe. Great heavy grooves and nothing superfluous here, just some great music that'll stay with you long after you hear it."

"Little Rock Ark.’s Mothwind harness this on their 'In The Clutches of the Novae' record. Released on October 4th, 2014, the record showcases Mothwind’s Once More ‘Round the Sun-era Mastodon-like rock qualities that give Mothwind a breezy ease to their earnest Sludge, a sound that retains intensity without drilling you into the depths."

In fairness reviewers are often full of shit, but my point is that it isn't only me that hears it.

Okay I admit you were right, their facebook page lists Iron Maiden, Tool and Mastodon as main influences.

I guess they do something just different enough that I like it, because I've tried many times and failed to get into Mastodon and especially Tool. Maybe it's the Iron Maiden influence (re: riffs to me sounded traditional) that changes it just enough for me. This is fucking weird.

I did like that Mastodon track though, maybe I'll pick up the album someday.

Shit, that makes me wrong about Tool. Fucking reviewers.

Their later stuff tends to be patchy, I sent you one of their better tracks from that era. Blood Mountain is pretty solid though.

The version with "When A Blind Man Cries" is essential.

I don't at all like it when they dabble in heavier forms of metal. If they stuck to a kind of orthodox progressive metal, or progressive metal with traditional metal influences, they'd have me sold.

Orthodox progressive metal? Isn't that kind of an oxymoron? It should be, at least.
