I begin my virgin journey into Sorcier des Glaces' material...

Let us know your thoughts. It’s a candidate for the best black metal album of the decade for me. I used to think the last track was a weak point, but I’ve warmed to it. Still not huge on the Obtained Enslavement cover and I think it should have been a bonus track instead. But since it’s not I can’t judge it as such. (I love Obtained Enslavement btw, I just don’t think that track fits in with the rest of the album.) The rest is amazing.

Only on Sunday's, any other day the pricks can work for it.

lmao.

Well initial thoughts; "(to the) Snow-Crowned Mountains" and "La Noirceur Éternelle" have utterly blown me away. The riffing is ice cold and the drumming is quite literally perfect from every angle of analysis I can give. The production has this immense spartan quality that makes all elements crystal clear without robbing it of anything. If this is what "atmos-black metal" actually meant it might be my favourite subgenre of black metal TBH.

I'm making sure to rate each song as the album goes along (since I'm at home by the PC and never get the chance to do stuff like this, because I usually listen to music while working) and so by the end I'll have a fuller idea of how I feel about the record.

“Storming from Beyond” has this one section, just over two minutes in if I remember that’s like an updated, elongated take on that middle section from “Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss”. The edge of the horizon is approaching and all light is fading as you are swallowed in pure darkness. It’s totally vivid and picturesque.

“Enter the palace of death!”

I’m not convinced SdG should really be called “atmospheric” black metal. Especially not when they incorporate some rather primitive riffing into a lot of their songs.

I was actually thinking to myself that there was some clear Immortal influence on that song and perhaps the title was a nod to "Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss," glad to know I wasn't just hearing things. That can happen when you love a song so much you start to hear it in anything remotely similar.

I'm also enjoying how diverse the vocalist is, he seems to be able to do everything without it feeling like he's showing off or pulling some ADHD shit. I'm sure people are tired of me harping on about drummer (not that I care, fuck you) but the drumming on this album is just pure class.

I'm not very familiar with Obtained Enslavement so it's hard to judge SDG's cover, but it sounds very good compositionally so I should probably check out the original. The final track reminded me of Darkthrone, but I can't exactly place my finger on which song...

They've been fairly consistently releasing albums (12 albums over 30 years).
Idol Hands was talked up fairly well and while I don't think it lived up to it's own hype I thought it was ok, but not as good as Kill To Survive and not good enough to make my 2018 list but it's worth checking out.

What in the fuck were they thinking when they mixed this. Might be even more brickwalled than Atheist's Elements.

Kurdt was thinking "I can do all this myself and save money because I have a computer and know how to twiddle knobs".

I think he handled most of the production of the last few albums and none of them sounded this bad. Maybe his hearing is going. A shame because so far the songwriting sounds like a big improvement over XI.

He's done at least the last two and I don't like either that much, and I'm definitely not a fan of this one. I gave it a few listens and just couldn't put myself through it again.
