Nightbringer - Death and the Black Work

Way too fucking long and some parts are quite boring, but I like the general aesthetic of the whole thing. First two tracks are quite cool and then it starts to wear thin. Anything else they've done worth investigating?

Fanisk Die and Become

Have you heard their second album, Noontide?

I wish I could find more stuff in this style that I actually enjoy. Most of it is way too overblown and theatrical in a way I find off putting. After a cursory listen of the band Eldrig, which shares a member of Fanisk, I don’t like it nearly as much.

Fanisk is just super evocative and “epic” music without ever becoming overblown. They create this amazing, ancient atmosphere that I adore. They actually have a sense of dynamics and show a level of restraint that other music in this style does not. They have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and execute it well.

I still need to listen to their third album actually.

That album seems hard to track down. Looked it up on Discogs and it says not available. I'm guessing cuz the band is NSBM, which is weird since lots of those records are readily available. Anyways, I'll hit youtube up and listen to it one day.

Fin - Arrows of a Dying Age

Finally got round to listening to this after Old Wainds mentioned comparisons to Sacramentum. Well fuck that, I don't really enjoy this, it's way too bouncy and upbeat and the vocals are grating. Features none of the dark majesty or songwriting prowess of Far Away from the Sun! I mean it's all competently played and it's certainly not bad, but I'm not feeling it right now. Meh, perhaps it'll grow on me.
