NPR Reader's Top 100 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books

Way more than 100 books. They throw "series" in there a ton, which can really add up. How many books in the Xanth series? A lot of books didn't place where I thought they would. Rama #76? Kingskiller beats Snowcrash? Thankfully NO HARRY POTTER.

I've read a ton of them though, didn't count. Some on my list still, some zero interest, and when my studying ends, I'll go back to reading more. I miss it a lot, but feel guilty if I'm reading something other than organic chem.

Exactly. I would hope that it got there due to nostalgia.

Interesting a lot of Hugo winners didn't make it on there that I would have thought would. Startide Rising? Gateway? Fountains of Paradise?

You have to remember that this is a reader's popularity list, not a critic's list. A lot of Hugo winners are relatively unknown.

Yep.

Poor Tad Williams was a little miffed about not making the cut. Most everyone on that list deserved to be there (although I saw 3 or 4 that made me wonder), but so did Tad. I was kind of surprised MST didn't make it!

Seeing the Kingkiller Chronicles in the top 20 reminded me that I still haven't grabbed The Wise Man's Fear. Anyone know if it's as good as The Name of the Wind?

It's as well written as Name, but the storyline isn't as gripping. I found myself rushing through sections that didn't push the story along. That said, it's still better than 90% of what I've read this year.

I've read at least 30 of those (including many of the series). It's a fairly good list, though it misses out on some of the best (Jack Vance and Samuel Delany), but this is a readers top list, and many modern readers have not read their great works. It also includes novels that arguable are not sci-fi/fantasy.

Still, if somebody wanted to start reading those genres, I could feel safe pointing to that list.

I am glad to see Robin Hobb on the list, as I think she is one of the better storytellers out there.

I've never read Tad Williams. Most of the hardcore readers I know are fairly ambivalent about him, calling him good, but not great. They also mention that he borrows a bit from other authors?
