Whats the big problem with fantasy lyrics?

Rhapsody=cheese but I still like them

Star One=cheese but I still like them

I like fantasy lyrics because it's different from what we normally hear. Everybody always writes about love or crap that happened to them...when i used to write song lyrics, I always wrote about crap that happened to me, but then I started writing fictional lyrics, and that was a lot more fun. But yeah, if it's cheesy, it kinda takes away from the coolness of it all.

Regarding The Trees, a common interpretation among Rush fans is that it's about the separatist movement in Quebec, though Neil has denied this.
Actually, The Trees is an allegory about the way that socialists/communists/collectivists, etc., etc., etc., try to eliminate what they perceive as inequalities in society by making everybody's life suck. (Hence, at the end of the song, ALL of the trees get cut down to the same size.) Peart wrote a lot of songs about the evils of totalitarian government. 2112 is a classic example, based on Ayn Rand's short novel "Anthem." (Though of course Rush does have a song of that name, too.)

(Take a look at my sig and guess where I stand on the issue. :) )

And on the main subject, I listen to fantasy lyrics expecting fantasy lyrics, so I don't have a problem with them. I really like Rhapsody, except for that narration.

Now, love songs I really have a hard time with. I find it rare that a love song is anything other than pure cheese. They're so whiny so much of the time, too. Maybe I'm just too jaded. Or too old. Probably both.:p

I discussed this over at the Petrucci forum as well. I would much rather listen to good fantasy lyrics than listen to "I use long fancy words or ethereal quotes that make no sense together to sound proggy" lyrics. DT and some other bands are notorious for this. Rhapsody and some of these other bands might have simplistic cheesy lyrics but at least they make sense or tell a story. Now the worst combination is when you combine cheesy ideas with phrases that make no sense together...ie. Dio.

Yes. You are quite correct. "The Trees" is about the evils that coercive equality can bring and the all too inherent flaw in the whole 'altruism' doctrine. And that the collectivist mentality only breeds more and more parasitism and further infantalism. One of the things I love about Peart is his disdain for statist solutions to trivial, everyday events(which have grown ever-increasingly more popular) and his reliance on the ingenuity of the individual. You only need a quick glance down at the bottom of my sig to know where I stand on the issue.

Too bad the last two Rush studio albums sucked though.
