Scenario: You're an athlete that is considered to be one of the best players in the game right now (including having won several individual awards in the past few seasons), but you are playing on a mediocre team that has not made the playoffs while you've been there, and isn't making any moves to be a contender in the near future. You've probably got 3, maybe 4, seasons before you retire, and you've never played on a championship team. You're a free agent, and almost every team wants to try to sign you. Your most serious options are:

Team A: A big market franchise that has won titles in 2 of the past 3 seasons, but its an aging team that might be past its prime. There are also a lot of egos on the team that might be ruffled with someone of your talent arriving, including one player who won the league MVP last season and might see you as a threat to his starting position. This team has offered you $1.5 million for the next two seasons.

Team B: A smaller market team that has recently entered the league. They have never made the playoffs, but have young up-and-coming talent (including last seasons rookie of the year), and only barely missed the playoffs last year. They believe that with your skill and leadership, you can help transition them into becoming a contender for years to come. They've offered you $2.5 million for the next 3 seasons.

Team C: You current team. You've won games single-handedly for them over the past few years, but you have no confidence in your teammates abilities, and don't think that you'll have much of a chance to win a championship if you stay with them. However, you are already a huge fan favorite, and management has send they will beat any contract offered by other teams.

If this was you, what would you do?

I think I'd lean towards team B. If I only had a few good years before retirement, I think I'd like a shot at a title, but to be a hero by leading the team rather than riding the coattails of a team that was already winning.

I´d go with B. Get a shot at the title and not be a filler on the big team. (Real Madrid anyone, they are good but not that overwhelming like they should be according to their list of players).

I'd go with team B but sadly no professional sports athelete thinks like me. Look at your oilers man as soon as their top players for to the end of their contracts the players went elsewhere, my canadiens never really had star players after roy so theres my beef with that team. And my poor expos, the 94 team was the best team in baseball and one of the best ever and after the strike they all got sold for some new bats and balls.

I voted for B, but, if I was going to go w/ C, I would sign a lower contract (since I have been playing for so long, I've made my dough) and tell current managers to bring in some talent with the money they save. But B is a good option.

I've been watching what A is like lately with the Blazers. Went out and traded for everyone under the sun and were a constant playoff team, but couldn't get over the hump (I think passing on Jordan screwed them, imagine if they had selected him, the year before they had picked Drexler). Now they can't do anything. Also an example of A was when the Mariner's last year sucked it up from being too old (does anyone here SF Giants?)
