it`s also good (at least I think so) to have a candy in the mouth while growling it helps keeping the throat from drying. I don`t know how practicable this is on stage though (I never had a gig as a vocalist so far)

No, you'll do fine with water.

Why not practise grownling the way you are bound to do on stage? If you can growl for 2 hours by taking all kind of "dope" but you can't growl more than for 15 minutes without all that, what will you do when you're on stage? In small clubs (where everyone start from) there's nothing else than beer and water...

Or do and use whatever, as long as you do reality checks often enough to make sure you can growl an hour having only water with you.
