The new Sonata Arctica sucks so much it has created a black hole.
Even those shitty UM-forum spamming power metal bands are better than this garbage.
I'm angry.

That's a shame. I was hoping it would be better than the last 2, which I think are pretty bad.

If you pick the good tracks off their whole catalogue you could end up with a single good album though. None of those picks would come from the recent two (3) albums.

Kamelot is mostly the same way.

Nah, I'd say Kamelot is the other way around. They went from being a generic euro-power band into a really good, more symphony-oriented power metal band. Their latest albums are definitely their best.

Hmm...I think "White Pearl, Black Oceans" would make a good movie track. That's the only song of theirs I can recall enjoying.

Kamelot's pretty consistent - I enjoy their earlier (even Eternity) and later stuff, though obviously there were technical problems with the singer in the first two albums. Siége Perilous is my favorite by them - I like the sober, old-school prog metal feel more than the "film score" sympho metal like Epica, Nightwish, etc...

Kamelot: Black Halo/Epica/Siege Perilous are solid, Ghost Opera: bad. GO is everything that's wrong with "modern" "prog metal".

I just read that one of SA's new song titles is "Shitload of Money". Maybe they can go on tour with Adrenaline Mob :err:

I might actually even enjoy the stuff they did with Vanderbilt more than the earliest stuff with Khan. As for the old school prog metal feel, if I feel like having some of that with Khan on vocals I'll just go for some Conception.

And I don't think Ghost Opera is bad at all, although it is the weakest of their latest albums.

Fourth Legacy through Black Halo are pretty phenomenal albums, in my opinion. Though they occasionally drift into "generic" territory musically, I think Kahn's vocals elevated the band above other power metal artists. There's barely a track I skip on any of those albums (including the bizarre transitions that sound Renn faire lute music).

Ghost Opera has some incredible songs, and a lot of filler. Poetry for the Poisoned is, well, forgettable at best.

I for one think Poetry for the Poisoned is another album that represents the band at their finest. It's got a nice, slightly perverse feel to it and is just plain full of good songs. Jon Oliva's appearance in The Zodiac is a really cool bonus, too.

It's not bad. Although I felt like Roy Khan sounded like he had a cold throughout the whole thing...and some of the songs are generic or clearly recycle Kamelot motifs ("Hunter's Season" comes to mind, since it sounds a lot like "The Human Stain" in places).

The Zodiac is a cool song. The title track is decent if you edit it all together instead of listening to a bunch of 2 minutes sound bites. I love House on a Hill, but it's clearly redundant in their catalog.

Exactly. The songwriting is either boringly straightforward and derivative (of themselves) OR completely muddled and over-layered with vocals that serve no distinct melody.

Hey, I have an opinion on Kamelot!! In fact, I wasted 6 years of my life having an opinion on Kamelot...

Eternity-Dominion: Barely ever heard them.
Siege Perilous: Good songs, but poor production.
Fourth Legacy: Good songs, sounds a lot better than Siege; Kinda cheesy at some points.
Karma: Their 2nd best album; solid songs and while they are a little cheesy, it's still cool and listenable.
Epica: Is it me, or are there like 5 songs on this album that sound exactly the same? It's cool and conceptual, but it runs together.
The Black Halo: By far their best album. Some of the best songs they ever did are on this album, and it influenced me a lot musically in high school.
Ghost Opera: The first 3 songs are cool, but then it kinda gets ordinary and I start to agree with Kenneth as the album goes on.
Poetry for the Poisoned: It entertained me when it first came out. There are a few tracks I spin frequently, but they hyped it up way too much for what the final product was.

Another note about Poetry for the Poisoned: You can hear all the issues that Roy Khan was having at the time in his voice; he didn't sound too motivated or enthusiastic about it, like he did on previous albums. I love Roy Khan and all, but he just didn't have the same magic on Poetry that he did on The Black Halo.
