So I spent the weekend doing this, and then bounced around listening to a whole bunch of mixes here and went WHOA, I was awful laid-back with the high mids even though I thought I was all teh hardcores 
But on the bright side, I got a pretty respectable old skool meaty/punchy sound going, particularly how it meshes with bass and drums- and the drums came out okay, I thought.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get into an attackier sound with what I've got, but it seems like I got it so the mix has physicality and you can feel what the instruments are doing when it gets busy- which is good, right?
