what makes you different from everyone else and makes you one of a kind?

i'm indian and i strongly doubt there's any other indians that listens to opeth etc.

and do you think it's better to completely unique or not and to what extent?

41 year old Certified Public Accountant who gets his 18 & 16 year old kids to listen to metal, who drives a Town Car blaring Opeth - I'm at least one of a kind based on everybody I've met and known so far.

Apparently to be a Portuguese metalhead living in Toronto is unheard of. "You're Portuguese you're supposed to be a thug, not a rocker!" This from the same guy who asked me what kind of cars rockers drive :lol
I don't exactly consider myself to be unique; just your typical metalhead I suppose.

I guess I'm unique in my ways of thinking, in my ways of hearing music, in my ways of seeing the surroundings and people, in my ways of treating language; these things come naturally, I never try to strain myself or evaluate if I'm original enough to qualify as "unique". There's probably at least one person somewhere in the world that is exactly like me, does this detract from uniqueness ?

There : I'm unique that I'm the only person in my city who actually knows and listens to Jeff Buckley :)

I'm very unique from everyone around me. To the point where I feel that me and the people around me are a universe distant.

I'm the only black/mixed, gay teen I know who listens to Opeth, or melodeath in general. I'm also prone to thinking beyond the limits of average people. This gives me a perspective on life that very few people understand. Only my mother, a close online friend, and apparently, Satori seem to understand my way of thinking. I also act way too mature for my age. I feel like I'm 40 sometimes with the way I speak, act, and think compared to other teens.

I think it is very important that you build your self-esteem and empower yourself. Most people find power by conforming to the majority and being accepted by many people, and others find power in being true to themselves, even if it's unacceptable, and finding those who will take them for who they are.

It doesn't matter which way you take, though I personally respect people who act like themselves more, as long as you get the strength you need to deal with every day life and the self-esteem to love yourself.

I'll second that one. My thoughts exactly! :o)

I'm probably not too different from everyone, but I'm me,
that makes me unique. I have my own thoughts and my
own opinions, and even though some people might think
the same things that I do, they will never be _me_ :o)
I'm one of a kind! We all are!

nah, that's exactly the opposite of what i think. we are all the same in most aspects and get different because we want it to be. difference is just a surface... if you scratch at it, you will see somebody just like you.

i always look at groups of little kids and see that pretty much each one looks like the odd one out from the rest of their group. Its just a matter of how u look at them, but really they are just 1 group who are all almost exactly the same. I think everyone is slightly different, but basically the same, theres a couple of major differences in intelligence/likes/dislikes/etc but theres always plenty of people who are almost the same as you if u look hard enough. But i guess its those little differences that become important and will be the difference between liking and hating someone. hm

Has anyone else noticed that it is now trendy to be individual? Or is that just a local thing around here? Either way, it's very disturbing.

yeah, i've noticed that for the past few years. people who think they're individualistic and unique always do the same thing -- dye their hair, pierce something, shave something, tattoo something, wear thriftstore clothes, take up "extreme" sports, listen to punk music, etc. there's a great bumpersticker...something like, "you're different -- just like everybody else."

When people first meet me, they're usually quick to make assumptions based on how i look. I like to dress nice, kind of casual-preppy, and people think i like Britney Spears and that kind of crap. I'm actually into metal (of course), jazz, and dance music (just for clubbing - i wish i could, but i can't club to metal!)
I like lots of different music - blame it on the fact that i took music in highschool, and i'm really into the technicality of music.

Being an "individual" is a good thing - obviously - but most people are so quick to place you into a category (rapper, raver, metal head, prep) that the only kinds of people who give me a chance to get to know me - they're all usually preps (cause that's the first impression i give off). Then they think i'm weird because i'm into metal, wrestling, and comic books! I wouldn't change for the world, but it's definitely hard to meet people with similar interests!

Lina: I just changed it. What you said reminded me of the quote on one of my AOL profiles, so I changed it to that.

It used to say "Obligatory self destruction"

Having just talked to SentencedtoBurn I can say that I am proud that I am a rare find in that I am a 15 year old that can say that I am true to what I am, and don't give a fuck what my peers think. I think its rare that you find someone about my age that is truly into what they are, and truly feels the way they feel. Most teenagers are blinded by what is around them.
Also whenever I find someone my age that "listens to metal" its usually someone with like 3,000 mp3's and 5 CD's two of which are good. It pisses me off because I have been into this for a number of years, and I can't find anyone to relate to, everyone is just trying too hard and is so fake. I guess I just don't like the "poser" attitude that surrounds this age group. Don't get me wrong, I give everyone a chance, and can get along with anyone really. It is just hard for me to respect someone that isn't true to what they are...

Sorry, this was more of a rant, than an answer..

I would also like to say that WarsofWinter is also the same way I believe. He is young, does what he wants, and dosn't give a fuck. Cheers man!

I am from Mexico ( if someone is from here too say so please ), I am bitter and suffer from chronic depression and enjoy too many different genres that go from grindcore and noise to jazz and classical a bit. I guess im saying the sum of all things makes me one of a kind, i cannot point a single thing out.
