One thing about Opeth....

They have this habit of writing melodies, which i listen to and go either:

"I'm sure I've heard something like that before" but I can't work out where. (I'm sure I actually haven't and it just sounds familiar for some reason)

or

"Why hasn't someone written that before"

Epilogue has that effect on me all the time. Does ne1 else ever think that?

Yeah, Opeth's best melodies have that effect of instant recognition and immediate connection with the listener, they are haunting right from the first moment you hear them. Within two or three listens, Opeth will become an inseparable element of your existence.

Well anyone can notice that they repeat themselves quite sometimes in their albums. I could go on and tell you lots of parts of tracks that sounds like each other, but im too lazy right now cause i just woke up

Yeah, that may be the case, but MAYH was my first album and the melodies had the same effect then. I don't think they repeat themselves that often neway

yea dude, theres some "nu-metal heads" at my school..no "true metal heads" and when I first met them I asked if they listened to black/death metal, and they all said yea..some.. and I asked what bands do you like and they all said, korn, slipknot and drowning pool after hearing that I walk away and make sure they see my big O on the back of my opeth shirt

For some reason, I've had quite the opposite experience. To me, although I can love thier songs the first time I hear them, they don't seem familiar, but rather fresh and original.

They can do both I find sometimes find parts of the music familiar, and the backing is often quite different to how I would have imagined it. It really annoys me when bands do a melody like one you know, but just doesn't do what you think it should, which luckily opeth never do

Grrr that annoys me so much Since when have Slipknot been black metal (except of course sine they started calling themselves it

The thing is that Opeth have some riffs/melodies/whatever that sound very much like riff/melodies/whatever other artists have done before them. Take White Cluster for example. In that song there is a break which is a complete rip-off from Dream Theaters Under A Glass Moon. And Harvest have a little melody on acoustic guitar which might have heard before in Iron Maiden´s Prodigal Son.

Yeah, I really recongnised harvest when I 1st heard it, it was so familiar! But I don't know that song so its not much help

And the other day I was getting some Porcupine Tree stuff to check them out, and I got Orchidia and said "that's The Funeral Portrait!" Or pretty close to it. Of course Mikael himself said that that riff wasn't very original.

And anyway the average Opeth song has approximatelly 20393213 different riffs so something's likely so strike you as familiar.

All agree with the familiar theory. I can't think of any rip-offs, but certain melodies are very reminiscent of parts of other songs.

Listen to Black Rose Immortal from 12:20, there's a continuous guitar sling that goes to 14:30. At 13:35 it starts sounding a lot like Iron Maiden's Afraid to Shoot Strangers.

Also, the main 'theme' (that melody string that keeps coming back) of The Moor sounds a lot like the Dune movie soundtrack (around the big battle), and the opening for bleak has a definitive analogue in the Diablo town theme.
