Opeth breaks US top 25 with Watershed ...

but i don't want them to become popular.

I think it's a good reinforcement for what they've always done.

Damnation got them into the Billboard charts for the first time. Instead of taking that as a cue to churn out more albums like Damnation, they stuck to what they actually wanted to do and came back with a proggy death metal album, Ghost Reveries. They placed even higher on the Billboard with that.

Instead of making another album like Ghost Reveries to try to recreate that success, they evolved again with Watershed, and now they have their highest charting album to date. I don't think it's bad that they're becoming popular, because Opeth doesn't let it dictate where they go with their sound. They simply do what they feel like doing, like any true artist does. And they're being rewarded for being true artists.

That's a good thing, to me.

With all this talk of "selling out", it would be interesting to note how Opeth would sound if one day Mikael deciding that they should actually sell out. It would definitely be an interesting direction, if not necessarily a very good one.

In case you're not getting it, I'm joking btw.

I think the numbers might be slightly inflated. Unless I am mistaken, 1 copy of the SE sold would count as 2 units being sold since the SE is two discs.

Even if I am right, it is still very impressive. Also impressive is that GR is almost at 100K sales. Congratulations, Mikael and co.

As long as it doesn't go to their heads...

well, the worst thing that could happen is that roadrunner could start telling them what to play like most record labels try to do. I don't think that would happen because Opeth is not an American band, and that shit mostly happens in America, the land of commercialism.

Lol...
Who really gives a shit if they're on those charts or not?
That only means that the sheep who pay attention to the 'top' music on the charts are finally going to experience some real fucking music. And you know what? They're going to be the ones going 'WHY IS THIS GARBAGE ON MY TOP 25?!'

Eh, who cares. We all know Opeth is brutal.

this is true, most people who read those things are idiots, and all it is is a chart that says who is buying what. so basically the people who follow those are doing so because they want what everybody else has. popularity contest meets sheepherder.

but it doesn't matter whatsoever, I'm happy Opeth has become a success story and the metal gods are pleased ^____________________^

You are mistaken. Actually the opposite is true - sales of the Special Edition are counted separately from the regular edition because it is a completely separate product. So since I only bought the special edition, my purchase isn't even counted in the sales numbers released so far. Just to give one example.

Congrats guys on your wonderful work charting well not only here in the US but all around the world. You've kept your integrity through nine albums of material and all of that hard work is paying off. It can only get better from here!

One thing I noticed about the Disturbed CD, at Best Buy it was displayed prominently in the new release section, and they were selling it for $9.99. Watershed was in the general CD area, and was selling for $14.99. Also, I went to Target just to check, and they had only two copies of WS, and they were selling for $14.99 as well, instead of the $12.99 advertised on the web. Wonder if this kind of thing is negatively affecting sales? This is Roadrunners fault that these things happen.

I bought the WS SE for fucking $26 at Borders. I had a limited time out (the kids were being babysat at home, wife was sick) and had no time to shop around. I got their ONLY SE copy, and they had to go out back to get it. So, yeah, sambo, I think that it's a testament to the fanbase that it's selling as well as it is.
