i just saw Opeth in D.C. and HOLY SHIT! best show...EVER! such a great set and songs they never played before live. im still blown away...

The show last night was amazing. They have never played tighter or more beautifully before my eyes. And to hear some of my favorite songs live for the first time... "The Moor"... "April Ethereal"... and the godly "Blackwater Park" to close the normal set out... was just mind-blowing. The strobe at the end haloing Mikael's screaming visage during the line 'the sun sets forever over blackwater park" will be burned into my brain forever... they are GODS.
On a sour note, I'm sick of the jerks screaming out requests for songs during their shows. I don't know how many times I heard someone behind me scream "Forest Of October" or "To Bid You Farewell"... the songs aren't in the setlist, get over it. Mikael himself even put a temporary halt to the screeches when it reached an annoying level with the quip "We don't take requests..." And even the dude screaming for Bloodbath caused Mikael to confirm that he's left Bloodbath... why the hell are you screaming for songs for a different freaking band?!? How do you think that makes the three other guys in Opeth feel? At the last show, when they toured with Porcupine Tree, Mikael seemed quite distressed when someone kept shouting "play some death metal" when all they had was their Damnation equipment. He kept apologizing profusely, but the jerk kept shouting. It was completely uncalled for.
I don't know how the band feels about it, but to me it just smacks of disrespect to keep shouting the same shit over and over just to hear yourself scream. I guess you get to say, "hey, listen to that, that's me" when you get ahold of the bootleg or something...
Let the band play their setlist and shut the F up.

I agree, this was my third Opeth show, and it was by far the best. I would have liked to have heard some different stuff from Orchid or Morningrise, but I'm still satisfied w/ what I heard. I can't get over how many people liked Devildriver, one of the most generic, unoriginal, f**king lame so-called death metal bands I've ever heard. How pathetic, they're trying to be the working man's death metal band. I liked how the singer kept saying how he thought it was so funny that no one had ever heard of them...I wonder why? Maybe because most Opeth fans, or even Moonspell fans (who bored me to tears by the way) know shitty music, and have no desire to hear Coal Chamber's generic version of "death metal".
On a side note, I know the setlist has been about the same everywhere, but I'm pretty sure it was in a slightly different order. Can anyone remember it?

There were a bunch of assholes behind me who were talking (well, screaming) to each other all through the set, except when they went apeshit for the Deliverance songs.
And they kept screaming for Free Bird. Hello, so old, not funny, shut the fuck up.And why does Opeth play the slow parts sooooooooo slowly? They were dragging pretty bad, and they've done that 7 of the 8 times I've seen them. Was funny to watch the bipolar mosh pit though.
But there were two major highlights for me: all of April Ethereal and the last four minutes of BWP. Fuck, those were great.
And I think Mike having a cold only does good things for those growls.

I was there as well! I have to say, when I got there, my hopes for a nice club were shot down, but when you actually got inside, you realized it's not as much of a hole as the outside leads you to thinking...
I heard someone shout Forest Of October several times, someone shout The Apostle In Triumph, someone shout Black Rose Immortal, and I couldn't help but shout The Twilight Is My Robe, but I didn't do it very loud.
I thought that the show had such incredible energy, though. I saw them on the Damnation tour in Cleveland, and while the sound was perfect, the audience wasn't that great. I don't think that had anything to do with the material they played, either. I don't think the crowd's energy would've changed if they were playing heavy stuff... While the Cleveland Damnation show's sound was perfect, I thought in D.C. the bass was a bit too heavy, and that the guitars echoed a bit too much during the mellow parts and mellow songs.
I thought it was hilarious whenever this guy near me shouted "The Moor" after they'd already played it, and Mike just got this hilarious look on his face and went "We already played it." It was probably just the delivery that made me laugh, but most of the crowd did.
And the pit was insane! I was in it most of the time. Surprisingly, a lot of girls were in it. And there were some hot metal chicks here and there...
We found that our car was broken in to when we got back, but nothing was stolen. The passenger window was just broken, so we got it replaced the next morning after checking into a hotel.

I thought it sounded better in a lot of the songs w/ the keyboard player doing the vocal harmonies with Mikael. It sounds much more like the album live since he layers his clean vocals so much, and makes the vocals more powerful in that respect as well. On the other hand, while some of his keyboard parts sounded killer, sometimes he was playing in parts of songs he shouldn't have. All in all, he was a welcome addition for me, and I certainly wouldn't mind if they brought him along next time they come back (in a couple of years). Man this fucking show rocked!

Anyone go see Novembers Doom/Agalloch/The Gathering tonight? Pitiful little crowd, compared to last night. 
Novembers Doom put on a great show. Agalloch's music doesn't really translate well live, I think -- plus, their stage presence was just...embarassing. And, well, I left three songs into The Gathering's set. I don't fault them for wanting a change in style, but it just ain't for me.

I know this is a rather old thread but I have to say that the Opeth show at the 9:30 Club in DC was incredible! We took my two teenage kids there and they loved it! My daughter wants me to get her all of their CDs now! I'm glad that I could spread real music to the next generation. She also liked Devil Driver though....oh well. Let's just call it a work in progress!LOL
